This is a line that Will Ferrell speaks in the movie Elf. I'm a big SNL fan in general and this line is priceless every time. Ferrell's character is obviously telling someone that they're a big fat liar. It's a funny scene, but I can't help but think these days that as a world, we're not serious enough about lying and dishonesty.
I have plenty of experience when it comes to substance abuse. My father was in prison from the time I was in diapers until I was 18 due to consequences of his addiction. My mother did her best, but was lonely and remarried when I was 10 to another addict. At first he just drank a little, then a lot, then went to drugs.
I was talking to one of my sexually active friends one day and she said that if she ever got pregnant, she would get an abortion right away. I asked her why wouldn't you want to keep your baby or give the baby up for adoption. She said that she doesn't want to keep the baby because she doesn't have time to be a parent and she wants to go to college and be a free teen girl.
How should we prevent unwanted pregnancies? I had an interesting discussion with a fellow student this afternoon on this very topic. I wore one of my various pro-life t-shirts to school today and got into a debate with a fellow student. The debate quickly went from abortion to sex education.
A little while ago, I had been at target with a couple of friends. There was a group of preteens dangling about, most on bikes, although one or two had stolen a(couple) electric shopping cart(s). They were asking for trouble, and were soon to be chased out by an employee. One of the kids asked me if I wanted to play chicken (being the only of my [high school] friends on a bike). Somewhat amused, I consented (this all happened in the parking lot, mind you). I would have hit the kid, but he pulled away just in time. He glared at me, and as I turned to leave an employee came out and shooed the kids, and drove the electric cart away. I'd see him later.
