confederate flag

I always thought it stood for the white supremacy and overall hatred but my husband says the confederate flag stands for southern pride, heritage and tradition. He says the Civil War was not fought over slavery and the abolition of slavery was a ploy to kill the South's economy at that time. I asked him why then, is it used by the KKK?
