One reaches a certain age and a certain amount of your life is spent driving. As such, purchasing gas in an unavoidable ritual. I've been driving for over 20 years now. During WW2, many Americans greatly decreased their consumer spending. The Great Depression forced Americans to buy less, and taught them how to save their money. By the time WW2 came about, they still resisted excessive spending in hopes of contributing to the war efforts; allowing much of the money to be put forth in the war.

Let's talk cars. Or should I say, "motor vehicles"? Because I'm starting to see fewer and fewer actual cars on the road. Oversized SUV's are ruling the roads, making them unsafe for other drivers and guzzling gas beyond belief.
