I'm black....Racism is out there...I'm not paranoid... and I'm not looking for it

Okay one day in class I was having a discussion with my "little table group" and I was making a joke. I go to a county school and so I go to school with 90% white people, and the other 10% is blacks, Hispanic, and other races. So I was making a joke which I usually do.

What does it mean to be black? I'm not sure if I can define that. I would say to have pigmented skin but then what about 'black' people who have very light skin tones? What should they be called?
