China is not a monster.

I've realized that I haven't been sharing the whole story of my life in China or the real picture of China in general. I've been positive at times; negative at times, but I haven't clearly illustrated how my perspective has changed recently. Now, I try to dwell in an in between non-biased space and give events that happen a deeper look.

The Big Brother that we forgot to keep in check??? (A 1984 reference for 2008)

Homeland Security has been allowed to pass some very, let's say interesting, legislature in the days following September 11, 2001. Some of the laws were implemented while we were in a state of shock and as a whole needed to see that our safety was actively being considered in Washington.

What's in our H20

About two days ago, I heard on the news that the water that comes from the faucet is not good for us. Studies have shown that prescription drugs for things such as sex hormones, blood thinners and other sources of drugs have been found in water. The cause of this is when people dispose prescription drugs or pills down the toilet and then it enters our water system.

Wee Tiny Environmentalism

This entry is the first in a series chronicling my activism adventures with my three young charges. Wee tinys can be activists. They have strong feelings about things, but often feel powerless to do anything about their feelings. Teaching them proactive strategies for bettering their world gives them the tools to stand up for themselves and their beliefs later in life. This is my mission with my charges.

Give a Big Cheer for www.halfofus.org

I was exercising at my school's gym the other day when I saw an ad on MTVU about self-cutting. The ad was from a site called www.halfofus.org. I visited the site. It tells the stories of people who have gone through depression, anxiety, and near suicide. I wish more people would have the courage to talk about these issues.

Confronting eating disorders -- where do we draw the line?

Eighty percent of the times that I have walked into the fitness center this year, her skeleton-like frame has come into view. She is on the elliptical, she is working out hard, and she looks like she is going to break in half. I can see her veins and bones through her pallid skin, and the dark moons under her eyes make me feel like I am staring at a walking (well, running) corpse.

Wisconsin's "Suicide High"

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

My cousin was the eighth suicide in two years at his high school. Two years ago last month, he hanged himself from an electrical tower near his house. He used his belt. His older brother found him at three in the morning. He and his dad cut him down.

And the Youth Shall Inheret the Media...Through Revolution: CurrentTV--By the Youth, For the Youth

So I just learned about Current TV by this guy that came to my school for one of my film and media classes. He told us all about Current. When I heard it was started by Al Gore, I wasn't so interested. Oh great, a television station dedicated to global warming, ManBearBig, and slow monotimous talking. As I learned, it's so much more than that.
