The Purple Heart is among the most prestigious and oldest of all military decorations offered to members of our military. Additionally - it was the first such decoration offered to the "common soldier".

Stephen King said this in an interview on April 4, 2008 at a writer’s symposium for high school students:

"I don’t want to sound like an ad, a public service ad on TV, but the fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don’t, then you’ve got the Army, Iraq, I don’t know, something like that. It’s not as bright."

My husband and I talked on the phone today, he'll be leaving for another mission tomorrow morning. (Seems to be back to back nowadays.) We had an "interesting" conversation, I guess you could call it, or a frustrating on, or an honest one.

Did you catch the sarcasm?

This weekend I picked up the LA Times and in the upper right column, the article was about Afghanistan and the rising activity of insurgents because of the warming weather. (They are coming out of their winter bases in Pakistan, and coming back to Afghanistan.)

The entire week, I have been raging with thoughts and ideas on what to write, how to write... excited to write. (I got my first midterm for history back and the professor actually liked my essay--I was delightfully surprised because I tend to... be really wordy, ramble on and on, and, oh yeah, completely loose my focus!!)

It is the first hour of the day... still dark outside, obviously.

I have a lot of friends in various branches of the military. A lot of people in my family have served in the military. I have 3 friends in the Marines, 5 in the Navy, and 5 in the Army, and I know there are more it is just way too early in the morning to try to remember them all. They all mean a lot to me and I know they mean a lot to their families.

I joined the United States Army in March of 2001 with an enlistment of six years in the Army Reserve and two years in the Inactive Ready Reserve. Just this past week my term in the Army has been reduced to just one more year. With that date crossed off I began reflecting upon some of the events that have affected me due to my participation in the Army.

I just want to take a few minutes to say thank you.
