Adventures in Community Service - Part 5: Somber Settings

I got some simultaneously good and bad news. Amy is leaving in two weeks to go live with her biological mother. It's awesome because she'll get to go to be with her real mom, whom she told me last night is like her best friend. It's bad news because her mother lives several hours away and I won't be able to mentor her anymore.  Read More »

Adventures in Community Service - Part 4: Chillin'

Amy and I hung out again today. She got new glasses and she looks beautiful. I found out today that her caregivers are her aunt and uncle. Didn't know that... She's such a sweet girl, though. Fun. And funny. We went to Walmart and couldn't find the trash cans. Then we bought a pizza - pepperoni at her request. We took it to my apartment and ate it and then went to the movies together...  Read More »

Adventures in Community Service - Part 3: Second First-Impressions

So, things didn't work out with Nikki. I don't know exactly what happened, but Children's Services were in contact with her and my supervisor decided to give me another girl to mentor. Her name is Amy and she is 17. She is living with foster parents right now, but I'm not sure yet why she is "in the system."  Read More »

Adventures in Community Service - Part 2: The Resistance

We were supposed to hang out on Fridays. I called last Friday to make plans for the day. Her mother answered and I asked for Nikki. She said Nikki was sleeping and asked who was calling. I told her who I was, and she said she'd wake Nikki. Nikki answered the phone groggily, even though it was 2 PM. "Hello?" "Hey!" I began asking her about her plans for the day. "Who is this?" she asked.  Read More »

This required curriculum class involves classroom discussion and examination of ethics and what makes up a good community and a well-lived life. The other part of the course requires 30 hours of community service, to be carefully recorded and drawn upon for the final paper.  Read More »

The possibilities float like ghosts

Every day, we are immersed in a world full of people we've never met. Every day, we see people, pass people, walk or drive beside people who we will never be exposed to again. They're not just "people" or statistics; they're people with an entire life - with a story all their own. They have families and friends, and a lifetime leading up to that moment.  Read More »

I hate old people!

I don't, but I heard someone say this recently. Seriously? Hating old people. So ridiculus! So, I'm going to list a few reasons why I LOVE old people:  Read More »

Sound advice from someone who's been there (Twice!)

Tagged:  •    •    •

Before I start, perhaps I should give some background into who I am. I graduated from high school in ’06 with something like a 3.98 GPA (if it weren’t for Pre-Calculus, I’d have had a perfect straight-A record throughout my schooling.) I then attended and graduated from a two-year college this last spring. In my time there, I worked in the Res Life office and as an RA for a year each.  Read More »
