Boot Camp: Is it really helpng the recruits, or hurting them?

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

When I hear the words boot camp I often think of a bunch of recruits doing push ups constantly and getting yelled at by their drill instructors. They stay there 13 weeks (if it's the Marines), and then they come home. After that, they go off to war. But I think that the government is pushing too hard and boot camp and we the public don't realize what goes on behind the scenes.

My brother left for boot camp about two months ago and has been severely sick for a month and a half of it. He has had pneumonia, bronchitis, and they even tested for tuberculosis. You think they would have sent him home by now, but no. He has lost all his muscle, he can't complete the workouts, and he is fading away. Yet they still won't let him come home. I understand that my brother signed a contract, but I think that since he is so sick, he should get to be released.  Read More »

They Are Just Kids.... Or are they?

Juvenile delinquents getting tried as adults.... is that really fair? I know some of you will say yes and some will say no, so I will try and hit on each side.

It's hard for us to believe that a seven year old killed their friend with a gun. In fact, we often look to the parents for reasons as to why the incident occurred. Was the gun out in the open and not properly stowed? And even if the weapon was not a gun, we all know knives can be pretty easy to get to. I remember turning on the TV and seeing a child just about ten years old get tried as an adult in court, and I didn't understand why.  Read More »

Genetic Engineering gone to far?

Tagged:  •    •    •

Today's world seems to be revolving around technology and the ability to use it to make the world a better place. But have scientists taken genetic engineering too far?

It started out as regular experiments, and then scientists discovered that they could grow human organs and clone animals. It even got to the point of where they grew an ear on a mouse. I don't see why this is necessary. Go ahead and use science for good and grow organs so that people can get transplants, but why do we need to clone things, and especially people? I have not heard one strong argument as to why cloning would be beneficial to our society. It was just be two of you running around. I don't know about you, but my mom already has a hard enough time keeping track of one of me.  Read More »

Living on a Prayer

Tagged:  •

Prayer in schools.... such a controversial topic in today's day and age. What I don't understand is why it had to be taken out of our schools altogether. We all hold the right to freedom of speech and freedom of religion as US citizens. Is it such a big deal to let those who want to pray, pray and to let those who don't want to just sit around?

Schools should give those students who wish to pray a time to get into a group or pray individually for a few minutes at the start of the day. Everyone else who wishes to not participate can just sit in their desks and converse with the others until the students are done praying. Then the teacher can teach, the students can learn, and all is well in the world.  Read More »

GERD: the ups and downs of a horrific disease

Tagged:

Most people today are dealing with the affects of heartburn or chest pain. On top of this, symptoms like sour mouth, feeling full after not eating, and acid reflux can control a human to the point of no return. If you suffer from anyone of these symptoms, you may just have GERD. Gastresophagael reflux disease (GERD) affects many humans, and the sad part, most don't do anything about it. I was diagnosed with the disease two years ago and it has been a constant battle.  Read More »
