Community Colleges Vs. Universities

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

It's spring, which means that high school seniors all over are trying to determine what their next step is in life. Some may choose to go right into work, others may choose a vocational school, technical school, massage therapy, college, university, community college, the list goes on and on of available options.

The two main things I have heard throughout my senior year are community colleges and universities, so I'm going to talk about that.  Read More »

Cinderella Story over for George Mason

Tagged:  •

The final two teams in this year's NCAA Tournament will be Florida and UCLA. This came as a shock to many just because no one chose them to be the final two. The most dominant teams were expected to be Duke and UConn. But thanks to a certain team named George Mason, UConn was beaten. It made many people think that an 11 seed might actually make it to the finals.... and WIN!

When George Mason reached the final four it came as a shock to everyone. Most people said they could beat anyone now and that they were unstoppable. But thanks to Florida, George Mason will not be attending the finals. But they should be proud of accomplishing so much and being the underdogs. I'm sure that no one will overlook them next year. Now they know they have the power to be one of the best teams out there, and they can really take advantage of some of the bigger teams losing their star seniors.  Read More »

Relay For Life-Help Fight Cancer!

Tagged:  •    •

This weekend, my high school is hosting a 24 hour event called Relay For Life. People from all over the city will come to this school and unite as one to help raise money for cancer.

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/par/content/PAR_1_Relay_For_Life.asp

How it is done is you get sponsors and donate money to the research for cancer. You make a team of people and they often come up with some sort of theme or characterization. For example: The Superheroes, and you have eveyrone dressed up in costumes. Once the relay starts, at least one member of your team must walk around the track. Everyone takes turns until the relay is over. This is an overnight event usually packed with music and fun activities. Also, people who have cancer can share their stories and show the strength they have even though they have cancer. The relay usually starts in the day and then ends the next morning or afternoon, so it's pretty much like a camp out.  Read More »

Smash Patriarchy!

Tagged:  •    •

This country has come a long way from what it used to be. Women now have the right to vote and the right to equal pay in jobs. We no longer have to stay and home and take beatings from our husbands or the men in our lives. We can walk the streets and be recognized as an individual. But I still see some discrimination in our society from some men. They think that just because God made Adam first that they should have complete dominance in the world. But I think that women share equal importance and deserve just as many opportunities as men.  Read More »

Is Getting Married At A Young Age Really That Bad?

Tagged:  •    •

I know of at least five couples at my high school that are already engaged and plan on getting married soon, like within the next two years or so. I heard some students talking about them the other day and their views clashed with mine altogether. They said it was stupid for a couple to marry so young because they will never last, but I think that that is not true.

Love can come to people at different times, so I don't see why it's such a big deal if someone wants to get married when they are 18 years old. We are capable of making our own decisions at that point and knowing what is right or wrong. I know many couples who got married right out of high school and have been married 50 years! (Including my grandparents). Everyone is saying that you should have a career established first and be financially stable before you even think about getting married. But you know what? Having someone supporting you the whole way can probably make the process a whole lot easier. I know a lot of you will disagree with me and say that it's stupid to get married at a young age, but I really don't see the downside of it.  Read More »

But I Thought The last Semester Didn't Count!

Seniors in high school are getting ready to graduate in 2 months, including myself, and are starting to miss more and more school. They think it doesn't matter because colleges don't look at the second semester. Whether it's true or not, the second semester is there for a reason, and students need to start paying attention to it and using it as an advantage.

I was sitting in history class today and a girl asked how many absences she had obtained in the past 3 months. I was shocked to hear that she had missed 14 days and most of them were ditches or unexcused absences! But did she care? Not at all. In fact, she was happy to hear that she had a D in the class, a slight upgrade from the F she had received the previous quarter. It's sad to think that students don't try the last semester just because they are already accepted to a bunch of colleges or know where they are going in life. But the truth is that a college can take back their offer of admission, and you could be stuck in a hole too deep to dig your way out of.  Read More »

Protests Against Immigration Bill Are Out of Hand

I'm sure you all have heard of the Immigration Bill that has been passed by the House just recently. Honestly, I'm kind of split on the whole situation, but I don't understand what the protests are doing!

Let's think about it. Kids are ditching school just to participate in these protests which will probably not have an impact on the final decision anyway. It's a waste of time. Yes, it's good to fight for what you believe in, but if you are here illegally, then what do you have to fight for? You technically don't have the rights a US citizen does because you are not considered one. Sure, many immigrants are left to do the dirty work in the businesses today and are making the work for some citizens not as tedious. But on the other hand, they are also taking away jobs that some people might want to have or need to have.  Read More »

School Dress Codes

Tagged:  •    •    •

I'm sure that all of you have had to go through your school's student handbooks and rules at least 100 times throughout the year. And contained in that book is a dress code, outlining what is considered appropriate and inappropriate clothing. Some students consider these rules to be ridiculous and a violation to their freedom of expression, but I understand, to an extent, where the school officials are coming from. But on school uniforms, I don't. Yes, it would make everyone equal as to what they wear, but some people could start having a lower self esteem and be really upset by it. And there is always the notion of retaliation. I know that out of my school of 2700 students, most of them would not be afraid to retaliate and wear what they want. Sad, but very true.  Read More »
