Every Tuesday night, I sit in my dorm room and watch The Biggest Loser. I'm not a huge fan of reality television, but this show has really caught my eye. Watching this program has made me wonder why obesity is such a problem in our society. And then I look at our food options, cars, and the media. Read More »

College: Don't Just Let It Be 'School'
Two years ago when I was graduating from high school, I was so glad that summer was about to come. But then I realized that I had at least 4 years of school left which made me think for a second: what did I just get myself into? But now I've realized that college is a lot more than just school; it's an opportunity that has endless possibilities. Read More »

Sustainability: This World Needs Help!
I never really thought much about the environment before college; it just didn't seem like a big deal. But this semester I enrolled in a class directly related to sustainability, and I realized how much our world is hurting. Read More »

Freedom of Assembly Violation?
Just announced yesterday at my high school was the banning of all sports assemblies, spirit assemblies, and assemblies for dances and traditions. All of these are conducted my Student Council, which is mainly their job at my school. Rumors flew around campus today as to why they were canceled. Some reasons were that there wasn't enough spirit, not everyone was recognized, and clubs weren't involved. Read More »

Will Movie Theaters and CD's Exist In The Future?
I'm sure you can all remember when cassettes fased out and CD's became popular. Then the VHS and VCR were cool until the DVD and DVD player came into being.
It seems like a movie is released, then it comes directly to DVD within a few months. I remember a few years back, it took about 6 months for a movie to hit the shelves. So you would go see it in the big theaters, then possibly the dollar theaters, then buy it. Well Brokeback Mountain just came out on DVD and was only released about 2 months ago. So the dollar theaters now pretty much don't have a purpose. The movies are just completely skipping that fase, and it's costing the movie industries money. Sure the people who made the film are making money off of the DVD, but the theaters themselves are left in a pile of rut for that movie. It makes you wonder if the box office numbers are dropping, and if we will even have movie theaters in the future. You can easily get online and download movies onto your computer and just watch them. I think it will be interesting to see what happens in the future of movie theaters, especially since their prices keep going up. Read More »

Closed Campus For Lunch
Closed campuses are becoming more well known around here. It used to be that sophomores, juniors, and seniors could all leave for lunch, but now a new rule is stating that only seniors in good standing (whatever that means) are allowed to leave for lunch. They gave all of the seniors that had permission to leave a different id card, and everyone else in the school had another one.
So if you want to leave for lunch, you go to the gate, show the security guard your id, then be on your way to lunch. Seems like a pretty successful process, but I think that it has failed miserably. Read More »

Gates Really Aren't Necessary Mr. Principal
Last year was my junior year of high school. I attend a public high school grades 10-12 in Arizona, and it's a pretty good place. There are about 2700 students there which is definitely a lot to handle, but things seemed to be running pretty smoothly. Until we all walked on campus this year and saw the BIG changes that had occurred.
I drove up to the school and my mouth dropped to the ground. My beautiful school now had these big, black iron gates around it.... around the entire thing! When I asked my teacher what the gates were for she said it was so people couldn't ditch class easily and sophomores and juniors couldn't leave for lunch. But I didn't understand because the gates were low enough to be jumped over! Read More »

Baseball Season Is Finally Here
With the 2005-2006 college basketball season now over, major league baseball is taking it's turn in the spotlight. Sure enough, Opening Day with the Indians vs. White Sox already brought some fun-filled times to the fans: RAIN DELAY! Not exactly the way people wanted to start the season, especially since the game went well past midnight. But isn't that the fun of it all?
These teams I'm pretty sure will make it to the play-offs. Yes a few divisions are missing because I have not made up my mind at this point in time: Read More »
