Not feeling like one of my own

Tagged:  •    •

I've gone to church since I was in 8th grade. During those akward years for me, it was always the one place I felt comfortable, at home, and loved and accepted. I'll be the first person to admit I am far from perfect, but I always atleast tried to make others feel as comfortable as I did at church, whether I was at church or not.  Read More »

This may not be considered progressive, but I wrote this for my English class and wanted to post it on here for feedback, whether its about Hurricane Katrina or the paper itself.

Smoking
It's a freedom of choice. You can choose to buy cigarettes and kill your lungs. But it is YOUR choice. That lady sitting next to you, she chose not to smoke, so please respect that. And her baby too.  Read More »

18, what can you relly do?

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

18 years old, a milestone birthday. Legally, you are an adult and take responsibility for yourself. You can make your own decisions and break away from your parents. You now are considered responsible enough to decide to buy cigarettes, vote, and go off to war. But you know what you cannot do?  Read More »

Voting

Voting

As an American, we have many rights allowed to us, one of them is having a Democratic Government where the people are allowed to vote in the officials. My question is why don't more Americans vote?

I know people have busy schedules and would like to spend time getting other things done rather than at your local voting poll waiting to put in a name. But do you realize the sacrifices people have made so that you have the option to go vote, so you can have the choice between this person or that, or just the fact that you can decide to go to the polls on election day or have something better to do. I get to have my cousin (who was like a big brother to me growing up) be in Afghanistan for the presidential elections. One of my friends from college spent a year and a day over in Iraq. He came back March 13th, his father died March 11th. He missed saying goodbye to his dad so I can vote (which is even more meaningful being a woman and seeing the lack of respect and rights women have in other countries). Both my grandfathers fought in WWII, and I didnt get to meet either of them because they both died before I was born. I dont care if you are anti-war, patriotic or not. Just think what others have done for you and that the one thing you can do to thank them is excercise the rights they fought for, vote.
