A Funny Thing About Race...

Tagged:

Ok, so I am half Anthropology half History major.  Obviously, things like race and cultural are of high interest to me.
So...funny thought about race...it is totally culturally based.  In (most of) our cultures we see white, black, Asian, Hispanic.  Besides the fact that this totally boxes us in (funny story about a girl in my class who is one quarter black, one quarter Native America, one quarter Russian and one quarter German....she is classified as black, although she is mostly not black).  Sure I'm white, but I'm a white mutt....  Read More »

Abstinence Education vs. Actual Education

Alright, so far, as you all should know, I am a champion of personal/parental responsibility.  But of course, we send our children to school for a reason.  In the public (and I'm sure, private) school system, we have the wonder known as "sex ed."  I do place the majority of responsibility of sex ed to parents.  Who better to instill the basis of strong morals than parents right?  Read More »

The Great Debate: My Morals, Your Morals

Tagged:  •

Well, why not start my blogging off with a bang!
 BANG!

Hah, well anyway...I was browsing one of the message boards I frequent.  A woman in Georgia was ticketed for a bumper sticker that read BUSHIT.  The woman got the city to drop the ticket and is suing with the backing of the ACLU.
Alright...let's for a second ignore the fact that obviously...the First Amendment is slowly deteiorating.  Let's also ignore the fact that this lawsuit, however frivolous, could be useful to show the city offcials that this sort of behavior is not tolerated.

Ok, so as I was reading the board, some members started to say "We need to censor bumper stickers.  We do not need our kids to see profanity everywhere."  While I agree it may not be appropriate or classy to cover your car in profanity, it's nothing that a child will never see.  Oftentimes, kids will not even understand what the bumpersticker is saying.
One member even went on to compare the bumper sticker in question to a grown man flashing children in front of a school.
Another member went as far as to say "How can we let people express themselves this freely when there are children..."

Am I the only person that believes parents should actually parent?!  Why is it so hard for a parent to explain to their child "Now, son/daughter (whatever)  sometimes people use inapropriate language when they want to be funny or can't express themselves any other way.  We know that this kind of language isn't funny and can hurt people's feelings.  Some people use bad language but we can think of better ways to express ourselves, can't we?"
And then the parent and child could think of ways to express frustration or words that are apropriate.

Is that unreasonable?

It's kind of like those who call for government to dictate morals.  "According to the Bible, same-sex marriage is bad, so we have to outlaw it."  "My God says abortion is murder.  WE have to make it illegal."
"Anything the government classifies as a "drug" is bad for you and should be illegal.  The government is protecting us."

It drives me CRAZY.  My morals work wonders for me, but they might not work for you.  That's fine.  As long as you don't force your morals on me or hurt me or anyone else while you practice what is moral for you...I DON'T CARE.
If an adult wants to smoke pot (which is illegal, but is FAR less harmful than cigarettes) in his basement, how does that affect me?  If two consenting adults want to be together, bound by marriage, how does that bother me?  If a woman wants to abort a 3 week old....fetus, how is that my business?  Don't flame me here, that's not my intention...I just want people to open their eyes.
Your morals may not work for me.  Whatever helps you get through the day, whether it be God or a strong sense of self is fine.  I just don't want it forced on me.  And I don't want you to damage me or my property (or anyone else's for that matter).
It just seems so anti-Constitution to force your morals onto someone else.
Just think about it.

I guess you could say I'm a Libertarian.
