When will scientist take a second to think about the implications of their actions?

Tagged:

I know that theres a few blogs on here already about this new idea to invent an invisibility cloak, but I'm going to go in a different direction with this. When are scientist' going to say, "You know what maybe this isn't such a great idea?". Maybe the world doesn't need invisibility cloaks.  First I need to ask this, if a person is waring one will they be able to see outside of it like in Harry Potter? Because this would be hella dangerous. Sure it would be nice to have for our military yes that's true but you know as well as I do that If we make it, our enemy's will also. And if they make it the public will be able to get their hands on it for a price. Can you imagine the danger this could cause? Terrorist' could hide bombs right in front of our eyes! Thieves might never be identified! Perverts could finally get into locker rooms, sex offenders could sneak right into your apartment without you even knowing their there!   Read More »

My progressive plan for dealing with White Collar Criminals

First off, if you don't know what a White Collar Criminal is I'll tell you. White Collar Criminals are the real problem with society. Think Enron, GE, DuPont, and many other companies that make millions of dollars a day. Some people think that it is just a part of business, but these criminals hurt and cause the deaths of more people every year then all other types of crimes combined, and cost society more per year then you could possibly imagine, yet we don't really have what you would call a white collar police force.  Read More »

A progressive plan to address sexual abuse Predators and Survivors

First things first never refer to them as a victim, we should use the term survivor. Victim makes it sound like their helpless and always will be whereas survivor gives them strength. I have even forgot to do this in the past but it will not happen again. Second, when thinking about sex offenders we need to remember that the majority of them were sexually abused at one point in their lives. The statistics are varied on this some claim the numbers to be high and some to low but several studies show that as many as 50% of those how were sexually abused in early life go on to become sexually abusive later in life. We don't really know why that is, but the other 50 or so percent tend to become strong advocates against sexual abuse.  I've done a lot of research on this in pursuit of my Crim degree and I've worked in a Sex Offender Treatment Program and I've come to the belief that the majority of sex offenders either were sexually abused as children or were witness to abuse, or where raised in an environment that portrayed very disturbing beliefs and ideologies about sex.  Read More »

Why do parents always get the blame?

Tagged:  •

Why is it that the parents always get the blame for practically everything that happens with their children? When a new statistic comes out about over weight kids or a child shoots up a school, the media always comes out blaming the parents. Well I like to look at the bigger picture not often the most popular because its easier to blame individuals then accept the very core of our society is the problem. First, lets look at over weight kids. I've read blogs on here and seen studies talked about on TV that say the problem is how much TV kids are watching today. Parents are letting their kids spend way to much time infront of the tube instead of being outside playing and exercising. Well yes this is true, but why are parents doing this? This is the bigger picture I was talking about. Kids are watching TV more now then ever before because thanks to this Capitalist driven society it has become neccesary for the majority to be dual income homes! It is becoming a thing of the past for a parent to stay home with the kids, we have to send them to daycares, and when we pick them up and get home with them we're to tired from the hustle and bustle to take them outside and play or for that matter to consistently cook them healthy meals. Now obviously I'm not referring to all parents but this does apply to the majority. The TV has become a cheap babysitter, you can set the child infront of it and get some peace and quite before having to go right back into work. And  lets talk about product placement on TV, everytime you watch cartoons and a commercial comes on your kids are flooded with these cool cereal that say their a part of a complete breakfast but are actually needlessly filled with sugar. Plus there are all these commercials for quick to fix microwave meals like hotpockets, pizza bites etc.. that are horrible for our kids but like the commercials say their quick to fix. Heck most of those commercials show that the kids can make these meals for themselves! Making it even easier on the parents, now I'm not saying that the parents shouldn't take some of the blame they could learn more about the nutritional values of these meals and learn that the commercials are lying to them when they say that their products are healthy. But again who really has time to make every meal healthy for their family, parents are often just glad to get to spend a few hours with their kids before bedtime, and these less then healthy meals infront of the TV make it possible.  Read More »

Indiana boy gets turned away from Prom for wearing a dress!

A boy in Gary, Indiana was turned away from the Prom because he was trying to wear makeup, a hair piece, and a dress to the prom. He was given a refund for his prom tickets and sent away. Members of the school board said that he was not turned away because of his sexuality, it was a violation of the school dress code. It states that boys are not allowed to wear dresses. A representative of the Gender public advocacy says that a policy saying short skirts will not be permitted would be okay and equal for all, but saying one gender cannot wear a dress while the other can is gender discrimination.  This wasn't the first the boy wore girls clothing to school, in fact these entire school year he has worn makeup, the hair piece, and fitted female clothing, just never a dress.    Read More »

Is Competition really healthy?

I've always heard that its healthy to have competition because it makes you strive to be the best you possibly can, but is this a good thing for kids?  I can see it in adults, in the real world we often have to try our hardest and compete for the best jobs by going to college etc. But what about kids, is it healthy for them to try their guts out to win, when we know that their can only be one winner? That means everyone else loses, I remember the sting of losing at things when I was a kid. Lets face it the majority of us lose way more then we win, does this set us up for failure? I know there was a time in my life where I was so sick of losing that I didn't want to participate in anything anymore. Its easy to say that as long as kids get the message to try their best it will be okay, but is that true? I remember wanting my parents to be proud of me, I remember them telling me to try my best, but how do you do that? And what does that really mean? That the way we've tried before wasn't our best? We wasn't good enough in practice so we have to try even harder? If you stop and think about this its a really confusing thought, and if we really can't grasp it now then how are kids suppose to? I think there are a lot of kids who give up on things because the words, "Try your best" was said to them. It instantly implies that your probably going to lose, but for the formality of it try your best anyway.  Read More »

Should the Terminator be allowed to run for the Presidency?

By this I don't just mean Arnold, I'm talking about any naturalized citizen? Should immigrants who have been here practically their entire lives, who have assimilated as fully as possible and love this country as much as the rest of us and in some cases more not be eligible for the presidency? I can't say I understand the reasoning behind this, I guess there's the fear that a candadite could slip through that doesn't have the best interest of America at heart. Humm, when I wrote that out it almost made me laugh at the thought, imagine a President who was thinking about him or herself or for a select group of people other then the people of America!!!!! Sorry I couldn't help myself!  What a joke of course thats a possibility, it's happened several times with Native Presidents. Of course their going to have their own agenda, I can't think of the last president that actually was only thinking about the the people. Can You? So why should this be a reason to stop Naturalized citizens from running for President?  Read More »

Are the Cartoons of the past safer for kids then the Cartoons of today?

Tagged:

I've heard a lot of adults gripe about how violent, gross, and irresponsible children's cartoons are these days. My question is: Where the cartoons of yesteryear better? Safer? More responsible? Well I have a two year old that watches cartoons like crazy, and of course I lilke to join him and I guess I can see what adults are talking about. Some cartoons do have messages in them that aren't very polite, and many times nearly subliminal in that their not really ment for children. But is this anything different from old cartoons? No, I don't think so, Look at the Looney toons, You have a dumb fat white guy that tries to kill animals but can never get the job done, a Cayote that uses various instruments of death to attempt to kill a roadrunner, a wise cracking rabbit that spouts political humor that most adults don't even get, a loud mouth midget redneck from the south who's always insulting and trying to kill the other characters, and a perverted skunk who's constantly trying to get a piece of puss!  Now I ask you is that responsible? I do find that many of todays cartoons corrupt our children in different ways, I believe they define beauty standards for little girls by portraying nearly all female characters as desirable, skinny, types with perfect skin. This is not as obvious in the cartoons of the past, as for violence I don't see that theirs much of a difference. Todays cartoons do tend to use stronger vulgarity then old cartoons, but on the other hand there are 10 times as many educational cartoons today then in the past. So all and all I would have to say that yes there are problems that need to be addressed with cartoons, and we should strive to get them fixed but its ridiculous to use the argument that cartoons use to be a lot safer for children to watch.  What do you all think? Do you know of any examples of cartoons teaching kids bad things?  Read More »
