Government Thinks Textbooks are a Burden, Too

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

Did you know that students aren't the only ones that think their school textbooks are unnecessarily boring, uncultured, and increasingly heavy to carry? The government recently revealed that they don't believe that textbooks are living up to their purpose. In order to be politically correct and not offend anyone, textbooks have been adjusted and scanned for content so that they actually distort the true meaning of what they are trying to teach. No wonder I couldn't stand to read my government book. The government also states that textbooks are "grotesquely bloated (so much so that some state legislatures are considering mandating lighter books to save students from back injuries)" (A Textbook Case of Failure). Now I know why my backpack is ripping at its seams.  Read More »

It isn't too late to get scholarships!

Tagged:  •

For those of you who are hopelessly fighting to receive government grants or University scholarships, it isn't too late to search for smaller scholarships on your own. Trust me, they add up quickly. Here are a couple of steps to take if you aren't ready to give up on getting college scholarships.

1. There are some really great FREE websites out there that can help you find scholarships based on your academics, individual achievements, artwork, composition skills, family heritage, or community service and involvement. To name a few, www.collegeboard.com and especially www.fastweb.com have really come in handy. This way you can search for scholarships that you are actually eligible to apply for and might have an interest in completing the requirements. What's great about these sites is that they list some scholarhips that are even available AFTER you start college. You can continue applying for financial aid well into your college career!  Read More »

American Muslim Opinion on Middle East Policies

"Georgetown's Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding has sponsored the first-ever systematic poll of Muslims in America...Fifty-eight percent of Muslims surveyed approved of President Bush's handling of the attacks, while 51 percent approved of the current military campaign in Afghanistan. Seventy-nine percent, however, felt that American foreign policy in the Middle East had led to the attacks, and two-thirds responded that the best way to fight tettorism would be to change those policies. Just over half of the respondents reported that Muslim individuals or organizations had been targets of discrimination since Sept. 11" (Poll Reveals Political Viewpoints of U.S. Muslims).  Read More »

Will your cell phone be the next to explode?

Attention to all you cell phone users out there: don't buy batteries that aren't meant to go specifically with your phone. You might lost an ear!

There are 89 million Motorola cell phones in circulation in Brazil. In the last two months, 5 have exploded while in use or in physical contact with their owners, recently making national headlines. One lady, while driving in her car, had her cell phone explode in her lap and had surgery and treatment for severe burns on her thighs and arms. Motorola assured its worried consumers that they will immediately investigate the cause of these explosions, but suspects that it is actually the battery that is to blame. "Motorola said the probable cause of the explosions was that the owners used non-original or low-quality batteries. (Mobile Phone Explosions Concern Brazilians)

College Dorm Room Poll

Tagged:  •

Here's a great poll question to answer.

If you could pick one habit of a future or present college roommate that would absolutely annoy the heck out of you, what would it be? If you're already in college, share your horror stories.

(I'll admit this is kind of lame, but I lack a college roommate so I don't have any personal stories) A habit of a future roommate that I would despise is if my roommate (and I know someone who does this too) purposefully mismatched their socks, but did so according to a complementary color scheme, and then wears clothes to match both colors. Who does that? I mean, I admit I purposefully mismatch my socks too, but I just grab which ever two are on top in my drawer. The time I would spend color coding my socks and outfit could better be used to get more sleep in the morning. Agreed? lol

Angry Athletes Make Interesting News Story

The top ten athletes who were least in control of their emotions were chosen to star in an article presented by Fox Sports, showcasing their inability to retain their tempers during sporting events. A few of these hot-heads include Rasheed Wallace, who holds the NBA's league record for most technical fouls in a season, Carl Everett, who responded to an MLB umpire with "an infamous face-to-face profanity-laced tirade," and Vernon Maxwell, who "jumped into the stands in Portland to pummel a 35-year-old heckler." Talk about losing your temper. For all you sports fans out there, or even those of you who want an interesting article to read, check it out here!  Read More »

Summer Odd Jobs

Tagged:

I need some help. I'm planning on having a day job this summer, but I need to earn some extra money and don't really want to get a second job for the evenings.

What are some easy/creative ways of earning extra money without necessarily spending my entire evening every night accomplishing the tasks?

Post you ideas! I'm sure they will help others or yourself too!

Frustrating College Phone Numbers

Tagged:

Ever call in to get information on a college program or a scholarship, play ring-around-the-rosie with transfers for five minutes to get to the right person in the right department, then find out that the person you want to talk to is out of their office and doesn't offer voicemail? Or better yet... ever been waiting on a scholarship for a loooong time, everybody getting your hopes up about it because they're sure you'll get the scholarship in the end, and then you don't? Well, that's me. Today I found out that the full-ride scholarship I was waiting on is definitely not coming to me. What really ticks me off is that I could have known a month ago instead of getting the mail everyday in the hopes that I'd get the answer to all my troubles. If this sounds like you, vent your frustration in reply to my blog. (It would make me feel better, lol)  Read More »
