I'm posting part of an email that I received after coming out. This was undoubtedly the most offensive viewpoint that I have ever seen. I agree with nothing in this message. I just feel that it is important to let everyone see how close-minded some people can be.
Here it is:
"I want to hit on some of my experiences and research with homosexuals and homosexuality. Statistically speaking, more than 20% of gays have over one-thousand partners in their lifetime and less than 1% are even remotely monogamous. Many times have I heard the same type of stories from homosexuals. "It never fills". You think that this is who you are and the following actions will correspond with "who you were born" to be. It's not true, and in an honest moment, any practicing gay will tell you that they are not happy and know that their lifestyle isn't right, but they do it anyway, because they believe they can't help it. Abortion Protests
So, a couple weeks ago, I was driving through my town, and there were like 100 plus people along the side of one of the major roads. Each person had an anti abortion sign of some sort. Most of them had cheesy, generic, pro-life messages on them. It really maed me wonder what the intent of the protests were. I really don't see how thier public display of thier beliefs makes any difference. They weren't protesting for a governmental body, or in front of an abortion clinic, and as far as I'm aware, they weren't taking part in a national protest. Read More »

College application
OK, so I've been working on my college application. It is most definitely not fun. I wish that there was a way for less stress in college planning. It is really involved and elaborate. We take tests. We write essays. We fill out lengthy applications. We figure out how in the hell we can pay for really expensive educations. Then, we have to get a bunch of teachers to write personal recommendations. Read More »

Gay in Iowa
OK, so you've come to my blog, your obviously interested in the prospect of what it would be like to be gay and in Iowa. I admit, from an outsiders perspective, it would be a deeply intriguing concept. By posting this, I'm not asking for sympathy or anything like that. I'm just providing insight. There towns around here that are smaller, and have an even worse perception of homosexuality.
I'll initially state the obvious: it is not a walk in the park. Read More »

More about me
So I guess that I should tell a little bit more about myself. - Usually, I spend my free time doing a wide variety of academic competitions. I guess I could be called a nerd - but definitely a social nerd. I am into speech and Drama. I sing. I act. I dance in a show choir. I also do Mock Trial, Future Problem, Destination Imagination, History Day, FCCLA, student senate and more, but I'm too lazy to type them all out - or to take the energy to remember them all. First Blog
OK, so this is my first blog. I don't know if anyone will read this, but I can only hope for the best.
I guess I should start by maybe explaining a little bit about myself. My name is Shaun. I live in a rural part of Iowa. I am 18 years old. I am openly gay. As you may well imagine, this puts me in quite a predicament. For the most part, gay and rural Iowa do not mix. Read More »
