Fat America

Tagged:  •

We already know 2/3 of the American population is obese. Then we flip on the TV and see people with eating disorders. where does this all come from? People do not understand that there are winners and losers. Our generation was raised with the notion that mistakes are OK. Well yes, they're fine, but we should still avoid them. We are taught to be happy with ourselves, but if we are perfectly happy with ourselves, whats the point in improving? We were basically taught to be mediocre, that staying the same is OK. So when people finally get out into the real world, they cannot handle that fact that bosses do not make room for mistakes, that people are not very forgiving. Because they cannot handle this, they are more susceptible to mental breakdowns and other health issues. So what does this have anything to do with obesity? People who are overweight sometimes just accept that fact and do nothing to change it, saying "big is beautiful." no, its not. no matter how many times you say it to yourself, fat is NOT attractive at all, unless you're trying to appeal to people with odd fetishes. Others just "can't handle it" because they're mentally weak, having been sheltered by their parents during their entire childhood. there needs to be a change in parenting. we cannot say "everyone is a winner." children cannot be sheltered from the real world.  Read More »

Prom Excesses

So it's prom time. It used to be that at most, a guy would ask a girl to this dance with a single rose or something. But it's somehow mutated into this HUGE deal where the guy has to find very creative ways to ask a girl to the dance. It's become like a marriage proposal. Most of the time it involves a lot of planning and timing, and takes place in front of a large audience, pretty much guaranteeing the girl will say "yes." I find this to be ridiculous. How about you?  Read More »

How Easy is it to Quit Smoking?

Tagged:

It's always been said that it's hard to quit smoking. That's why we have products such as nicorette and truth commercials, right? But something interesting came up last night whilst I was chatting with a friend. He showed me a photo of his computer desk and sitting right next to the computer was a frequently used ashtray. He told me he quit since the photo was taken, saying it's easy to quit smoking cold turkey. All he did was eat brownies instead of smoke. I've never smoked before so I don't know how addicting it is. Does anyone have a personal experience that's similar/different to that of my friend's?  Read More »

Free Speech?

Sophomore Tyler Harper wore a T-shirt that read "Homosexuality Is Shameful" on the "Day of Silence" and was told to take it off. When he didnt, he had to sit in the school office for the rest of the day. In the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Stephen Reinhardt supported the school's decision.

I support Reinhardt and the school's decision because the t-shirt interferes with the gay and lesbian students' right to learn. Homosexuals should not go to school feeling like people do not want them there. A Los Angeles Times editorial says that the t-shirt did not "feature lewd or 'fighting' words." But who's to say it does and doesn't? Do we really want to revert back to a time when African Americans had to face groups of white protesters when they went to school in Little Rock, Arkansas?  Read More »
