Greed

Tagged:  •

Yesterday my inbox was on fire. Everytime I checked my mail there was another phantom post trying to entice me into giving somebody my personal banking information. Of course you're thinking, everyone knows those are scams...right? Yeah, they know, they have to know. When you go to most banks now, signs are posting warning you about email scams that say someone has signed up to your bank account, your paypal, your ebay, or the biggie some sob story about a guy in Nigeria that needs to transport funds and will give you a cut.  Read More »

Labeling

Tagged:  •

Why are people (I'm not saying Americans, just people in the broad sense of the word) so quick to label. There are the obvious descriptive labels: race, gender, ethnicity. Then there are the assumatory labels: all single mothers are struggling to make it, all black people are poor, all white people are rich and racist. Then there are the labels that come with our life choices: if you are homesexual you're labeled a heathen, if you're a stripper, you're a slut; if you are unemployed, you're lazy, etc.  Read More »

Whitney Houston

She has been heralded as the greatest voice in the world. The little body produced a lot of power and is credited with some of the greatest songs ever. Now, she is tabloid fodder. Each week there is something new about Whitney: dissheveled picutures of her having a crack attack; being beat by her husband, losing her home, damaging her vocal chords with crazy drug use. Everyone shakes their head and says that its sad. People make jokes. Even those who are her colleagues have let her go. Why didn't they stop her? Why didn't they try harder to help. In this country, we are so quick to judge and not quick enough to put things to an end. So many times, women die at the hands of an abuser because neighbors and friends felt that "it wasn't their business."  Read More »

Why?

I looked at the news this morning and could not believe my ears. I can't even believe that I am going to address this but at this point I feel I can't hold this in. On this morning's Good Morning America, Diane Sawyer said that Bush would make a presidential address tonight. Okay, this is normal this is what they do, presidents make addresses. She said the topic would be about sending national guard to the Mexican border to keep illegal immigrants out. Say what? Am I hearing this correctly? Our president, despite the mass of troops overseas constantly dying, not finding Osama, the Medicare crisis, the poverty crisis; wants to send troops to the Mexican borders because the immigrants are attacking. What was that, oh they're not attacking us.  Read More »

Double Standard

People often talk of double standards but I don't think anyone has really broached it from this angle: working mothers against working mothers. What makes one better than the other? My focus centers around working mothers serving as supervisers and maybe even mentors to other working mothers. I have worked under 2 of this high class know it alls and let me tell you it wasn't pretty. The first time, this woman reigned terror over me and her underling.  Read More »

Procrastination

Why do we procrastinate? I ask this because minutes ago I was waiting in the mother of all lines trying to purchase a Hostess cupcake. There is a little shop down from where I work that sells gifts, snacks, etc. And it seems that people have just realized (despite all of the advertising and mom's everywhere dropping hints) that Mother's Day is this weekend. I prefer to shop early because I hate crowds. While I have the money to spare and the time I get my gifts. I got my mom's gift at the end of April. But you know, its not just mother's day. In college, you can tell the last week of school by the load of kids hogging the computers in the lab. If you just need to print out an assignment to bad because the paper was assigned at the beginning of the year yet the day before it was due, we felt the time had come to prepare it. I think American's are fueled by procrastination. Why does it take us forever to respond to natural disasters, health care problems, and poverty? Has procrastination run amuck? Where do we go now?

Job security?

I have been told that I have a strong work ethic. I began babysitting and raking leaves at age 10 to help with household expenses. When I was legally able to work, I have steadily held jobs so that my mother did not have to worry about items that I needed. I like to work, I like to excel and I do it well. Recently, I began to doubt my abilities after being asked to choose between furthering my education and continuing to work for a company that I loved.  Read More »

Modern Religion

Tagged:  •

Everyone truly wants to believe in something - and they usually do. If you poll the inhabitants of the US, most believe in good and evil and right and wrong. Yet organized religion or rather attending a church service and saying I'm a Baptist, Catholic, etc seems to be on a decline. People are spiritual or rather than say they believe in a higher power or something but not the organization of this.  Read More »
