It's about time!
The Jan. 7 edition of USA Today has a story entitled "Mayors increasingly seek to take charge of schools."
In response to schools in Washington, DC the story states: "A majority of fourth- and eighth-graders are failing to read or do math at basic levels. Read More »

No diploma required
In an attempt to create a better future for the masses, several colleges have mandated that a high school diploma is not required to attend college. As reported in The New York Times

Crisis continues
The war continues to rage in Darfur. Many wonder why should we care. We have poverty and problems of our own in America. As many of you know, many still suffer down on the MS gulf coast and in the new orleans region. So why Darfur? A lot of people will assume that many are dying as a direct result of the war. That is not so. The war is a cause of death-indirectly. When you burn down villages, rob and pillage it causes problems in the community. People are malnurished and being stricken will illness that soon will not able to be healed due to finances. Students can start petitions and write letters to their congressmen to increase assistance to this region. Older people can consider sponsoring a child or even bringing one into their home. Women
I got involved in this web site for the scholarship but now I want to make my own nonprofit focusing on poverty and women's issues. I found this quote while searching the net:
Oh! The crying injustice towards woman! She is crushed in every step she takes, and then insulted for being what a most pernicious education and corrupt public sentiment has made her.

Signs
I am beginning to wonder if we are letting to many things slip by us. Are we to caught up in our own lives to pay attention to the distress of others. I have asked myself this question, many times before but I ask again because of the folowing article found in today's USA Today:
Newspapers in Florida and Illinois have new information this morning on the cancer doctor who threw his children to their deaths from a Miami Beach hotel and then jumped, killing himself. Read More »

What's In A Name?
Recently my local news station did a story on how your name can affect your life. It's certainly not a new concept. When I was a reporter some of my friends would talk about names and racism: if a job saw Susan versus Tameka they would more than likely call in Susan assuming she is white and disregard Tameka because they assume she is black. Well, I am in a unique situation...my name is greek, it's Phalia and I tend to talk rather proper on the phone (good grammer, blah blah) So I have gone into interviews and they would look past me and I'd say I'm Phalia or some would guess it was me but, my name is confusing.
