Why all the Violence in America?

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

I recently watched Michael Moore's "Bowling For Columbine."  Now many of you may stop reading right here because you disagree with him and his views, but this movie raises very valid points.

Why is there such an insane amount of violence in America?  We have too many guns?  Nope that can't be why, since Canadians have way more guns than Americans, but in their country less than 40 people are murdered a year.  How many are murdered in America each year? Over 11,000!  Read More »

Some people say that as Americans, we need to support the President's actions.  They say not supporting the war is unpatriotic.  We voted for the President, so we need to respect his choices.  Senator Kerry says otherwise.  Read More »

Beauty Pageants: Degrading or Great Opportunities?

Tagged:  •    •

Last night the Miss USA pageant was on television.  I didn't watch it, but sometimes I've seen parts of pageants from previous years.  Some people are completely against these pageants, claiming they're degrading to women.  Others feel that they provide great opportunities, like offering substantial scholarship money so that women can get an education.  Well, here's my opinion of the pros and cons of these pageants:  Read More »

Medicinal Marijuana Use: Rejected by FDA

Tagged:  •    •

The FDA “concluded that no sound scientific studies supported medical use of marijuana for treatment in the United States, and no animal or human data supported the safety or efficacy of marijuana for general medical use.”  But in 1999 the FDA had said that “marijuana’s active components are potentially effective in treating pain, nausea, the anorexia of AIDS wasting and other symptoms, and should be tested rigorously in clinical trials.”.  Read More »

Teen Dieting = Long-Term Problems?

Tagged:

Now when I first read the title of this article, "Teen dieting linked to long-term problems," I was a little bit confused.  In today's society so many teens are obsese, and this seems to be saying that they shouldn't diet?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12390031/

"Teens who go on diets or take unhealthy measures to lose weight may end up gaining pounds in the long run, according to a new study.  Read More »

Breast Implants = Suicide Risk?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060413/hl_nm/implants_suicide_dc

"NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A new study adds to evidence that while women with breast implants are not at greater risk of breast cancer, they do seem to have an elevated rate of suicide.

The reason for the suicide risk is unclear, but several studies have now come to similar conclusions. Some researchers believe the link is explained by higher rates of depression, anxiety and low self-esteem among women who undergo breast augmentation."  Read More »

Thanks for saving our soldier...but don't expect a reward

Mohammad Gulab saved a U.S. Navy SEAL last June.  Gulab is an Afgan who found a wounded soldier, the only survivor of a 4-man squad that was ambushed by the Taliban.  Gulab brought this man home, fed him, and sheltered him until a U.S. rescue team finally arrived to airlift him away 2 days later.

Why did Gulab save the man?  Because he's a kind man.  He says that he believed it was the right thing to do and that under his mountainous tribe's code of honor, they call it their sacred duty to give shelter and assistance to anyone in need.  Gulab did not have to save the American, but he did out of the kindness of his heart.   Read More »

State Assisted Suicide

Tagged:  •    •

Currently, state-assisted suicide is illegal in every state except for suicide.  Will it one day be legal nationwide?  So far the Supreme Court has ruled that it is not a right protected by the 14th ammendment, but will that ruling ever change?

Through  the years more controversial medical things are becoming legal and (unfortunately) common, such as abortion, the removal of respirators and feeding tubes from patients with brain damage.  Right now many people can't imagine that in the future there may be "death" clinics with physicians performing state-assisted suicide.  Should this ever be legal?  In my mind, no.  Read More »
