Many people think the world is overpopulated.  For some people, that's their justification for abortion, among other things.  But is it really overpopulated?  Right now Japan's fertility rate is at an all time low.  Its population is actually decreasing.

"TOKYO - Japan’s fertility rate — the average number of children a woman bears in her lifetime— fell to an all-time low of 1.25 in 2005, the health ministry said on Thursday, the latest sign of the threat to the world’s second-biggest economy from an ageing, shrinking population.  Read More »

Tanning Beds: Worth the Skin Damage?

Tagged:  •    •

Tanning beds have been proven to cause skin cancer.  Is tan skin really worth skin cancer?  Not to me.

When they announced the harm of tanning beds, I thought many people would have stopped going to tanning salons.  But that did not happen at all.  The majority of girls in my school go tanning at least 3 times a week...even in the summer.  In the winter they probably go more than that.  Why?  So they can look a little bit darker?  Read More »

The Bushmeat Crisis

Tagged:  •    •

What is bushmeat?  It's basically just meat that's hunted.  Then it is later traded or sold.  Why is this currently a huge problem?  Well, the bushmeat trade in Africa is killing off entire species.

Here in the U.S. the main types of meat consumed are beef, pork, and chicken/turkey.  What about in Africa?  One of the most consumed animals is a species of antelope.  The problem is that many Africans don't realize the harm they're doing to the environment.  They consume all of the following animals: crocodiles, rats, gorillas, orangutans, elephants, etc.  Within each of these groups of animals there are species going extinct.  But the African people are not educated about this.  They don't realize that they're killing off entire species.  Read More »

Dating Violence: Boys at Risk Too

Tagged:  •

Two weeks ago I presented my senior project on domestic violence.  It's so sad how common it actually is.  Before graduation, 60% of high school students will be involved in an abusive relationship.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12858852/

"Nearly 1 out of 11 U.S. high school students is subjected to physical violence from their boyfriend or girlfriend each year, the results of a nationwide survey suggest.  Read More »

Is Abortion Worth Death?

Tagged:  •    •

Many doctors have disputed the abortion pill, RU-486 since it came out years ago.  Some believe it has major health risks, which include death, while others believe it's perfectly fine and has a low risk of side effects.

 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12743453/

"ATLANTA—Scientists disagreed Thursday over whether the abortion pill RU-486 played any role in the deaths of four California women who died from a rare bacterial infection.  Read More »

Blessed Virgin Mary . . . Pray For Us Sinners

Tagged:  •

I have noticed that many people are misonformed about the Catholic faith's honor of Mary.  Some other Christian denominations think we worship her, like we worship Jesus.  That is not the case.  Jesus is our one and only God, and yes, we worship Him.  As for Mary, we believe that she is a VERY important person.  We honor her.  She is absolutely amazing.  She has given me so many graces.  Read More »

Factory Farming

While flipping through the May 22nd Newsweek magazine in my Contemporary Issues class, I came across the saddest advertisement.  Here's what it said:

"Q: Why can't this veal calf walk?"

Then there's a picture of a little calf chained up and standing inside a wood cage in which its head heas to be jammed against the wall because it's not even big enough for the calf to stand up straigh.  Then the ad continues:  Read More »

Domestic Violence Statistics

Tagged:  •    •    •

Tomorrow I'm presenting my senior project, which is on the topic of domestic violence.  While researching this topic, some of the statistics I found were absolutely staggering.

-Worldwide, 1 in 3 women will be victims of domestic abuse in their lifetimes.

-A woman is beaten every 14 seconds, while men are beaten about every 28 seconds.

-Before graduation, 60% of students will be involved in an abusive relationship.  Read More »
