It seems as if people have distorted the truth between reality and fiction. With the recent uproar in "The Da Vinci Code" "conspiracy," religious leaders, common church goers have accused the FICTIONAL book of trying to rewrite Christian history. (http://www.lodinews.com/articles/2006/05/19/news/2_davinci_060519.txt) I realize that people do not like people or literature to criticize their religion, but to become so obsessed over a single book, that many think of as a good "book," not "biblical teaching" so as to spend six weeks covering how the book is wrong, as was done by a United Methodist Pastor recently, is utterly ridiculous. Actually, however, if i was Dan Brown, i would welcome the Christian uproar with enthusiam, knowing that publicity equals money. The Christian community might have a point, however, to ensure that people understand that the book/movie is not an actual representation of reality, simply because the book has a lot of references to mathematics and art history. To feel threatened by a fictional story, however is insane. People need stop becoming so zealous over a book/movie, and accept the story for what it actually is, a fiction.

Prom: Is it all that it's cracked up to be?
What is so special about this school dance? Why is it that on this single night, we spend more money than any reasonable person would ever think about spending in a single night. Let's just think about the expenses involved on this occasion:
- Formal Wear (Tuxes and dresses can get quite expensive.)
- Prom Ticket (for either you or a date, or both)
- Ride- Perhapes you will be riding in a limo. Although this cost is usually divided amongst friends, it can still be quite expensive.
- Dinner- For some reason on this night, people feel as if they have to go to the most expensive restaurant there is, and get the most expensive plate the restaurant serves.
- Post-Prom activities- (Sometimes people might go bowling or do something else related.)
The problem with this setup is that it is usually the guy who buys most if not all of this. I am not saying that males should not act like a gentlement and buy things for their date, as is tradition, but all these items can really start to add up. The truth is that, for most males, prom night is just a waist of money. The only ones who really benefit from this night are females, because they finally get to "fulfill their goal of feeling like a princess." I am, in no way criticizing this tradition, I am, once again, mearly pointing out that this night is meaningless in all senses, besides to fulfill traditions of being a high schooler. Also, it is very rare that people come back the next few days saying that prom was one of the best experiences of their lives. There has to be a more economically and time efficient method of having a good time (since that is the purpose of prom after all, right.)

Another kick to the gay community
According to a federal appeals court in California, gay couples cannot contest marriage definition. The reason being that since gay couples are not married, then they have no right to contest the marriage definition. This has effectively excluded a whole group of people out of trying to change the marriage laws. I personally don't see how same-sex couples should be treated any differently than opposite-sex couples, since people who are in love should be allowed to pronounce their love with a marriage. The point is that with this ruling, gay couples couldn't really contest the marriage laws at all, which doesn't make sense since they are the ones who are wanting to change this law. This ruling will more than likely receive an uproar of criticism from the gay community, and wind up with another federal supreme court hearing. Read More »

Covering Darfur
Out of the following three news sites, guess which one has absolutely nothing on the front page about Darfur:
- cnn.com
- foxnews.com
- bbc.co.uk
If you guessed foxnews.com, then you are absolutely correct. Fox has consistently lacked the abilitiy to cover human interest stories. They seem to be interested in nothing other than gay marriage, how liberals are ruining the world, and how much progress the world has to make to catch up with U.S. standards. Well, guess what, there are millions of people suffering in Darfur, and the president seems to be doing nothing. History has taught us, in the form of the haulocaust in WWII, that when mass genecide goes unoticed, horrible things happen. Read More »

How does the O'Reily Factor help anything?
I cannot watch the O'Reily Factor without going insane. The show is absolutely absurd. The whole setup is O'Reily, an ultraconservative, brings up an issue. He then has another conservative and then a moderate to liberal person come on the show to debate the issue. No matter what the issue is, it is never discussed rationally. By the end of the debate over the topic, it sounds like your in a war zone with all of the yelling taking place. You would think that mature adults could sit down and have a rational conversation without resulting to raising their voices to try to get their point accross. Read More »

Religion: Atheist or Agnostic or just hatred?
Firstly, let me start out by saying that I am a Christian, and I do get offended when people criticize God, or my faith, but that does not mean that I think people who criticize such things should stop, since i also believe in freedom of speech.
I do think, however, that many people get Atheism, agnistics, and utter hatred of religion mixed up. Some people proclaim that there is no way of prooving or disproving God or the afterlife, while atheists deny the existance of such things. These don't tend to get mixed up as much as atheisim and hatred. I have read and heard of many people who proclaim to be atheist who directly attack God. THIS IS NOT ATHEISM. This is a direct attack on God, which means that the person acknowledges God's existance. If the person was truly athiest, then they would not attack God, but would, instead attack the irrational thinking that might sometimes be associated with religion or God. Read More »

End of the Hummer?
Why do people feel the need to drive the biggest vehicles that they can possibly buy? I can understand how if you need to move something like lumber around all day, then you'll probably want to get some sort of big truck instead of a hybrid car, but most people do not used their huge vehicles for the purposes for which they were intended. These huge SUV's, Hummers, and trucks are mearly wasting already dwindling amounts of gas. The fact is that gas is a limited resource, which makes it scarce, which means that these huge vehicles are doing absolutely no good in the modern world besides ensure that rich oil companies get even richer. Why is senior year so Expensive?
This year, is my senior year in high school. So far, i have had to pay for:
- Graduation Pictures
- Cap & Gown Pictures
- Cap & Gown
- Graduation Invitations
- Prom (those of you who go to prom know that it is a real expensive night.)
- All other non-school related fees (like gas and car insurance.) Yes, I have to pay for my own insurance and gas.
- College applications (You pay for a simple YES or NO.) Depends on how many you fill out, but at least 2, at perhaps $50 a piece.
- Once accepted into a college, the commitment deposit.
- Housing registration fee.
I don't know about you, but my parents don't pay for all of my stuff, and i am flat broke. I now work at a computer store, (used to work as a courtesy clerk at Krogers, I hated the job,) called 21st Century Computer Solutions. Why Does senior year have to cost sooooo much? Don't they realize that the following year, we will be in college, and (if your parents don't pay for it,) we will paying out a bunch of money (tuition, books, meals, boarding.) This just seems slightly absurd at how much money senior year of highchool plus the years spent in college is sucked out of a person's finances. Read More »
