Ever hear abotu Khaled al Masri? A story of torture, "rendition", and a challange to the Bush administrations policy

Another important letter in my email:

Dear Friend,

The case of our client Khaled El-Masri is one we should all be watching carefully. Yesterday, he stood up in a courtroom to challenge the Bush administration's use of "extraordinary rendition," abduction, detention and interrogation in secret overseas prisons.

While it is a credit to our system of justice that Mr. El-Masri can now demand accountability from his CIA kidnappers, all of us must ask, how have we let our country stray so far from its ideals?  Read More »

Has the NRA handcuffed gun control laws? THey ARE one of the most powerful lobbies...

In my email once again! (What would I do if I weren't receiving these smart, informative tidbits so often!)

This from the Brady Report ...it Profiles How The NRA Has Handcuffed Federal Gun Law Enforcement

The National Rifle Association has claimed for years that we just need to "fully enforce existing federal gun laws" rather than "passing new gun laws." Yet, the NRA's actions reveal this claim to be utter hypocrisy.  Read More »

Breaking-Iraq Study GRoup will recommend pullback of troops!

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •    •    •

CNN reporting that the Iraq Study Group will recommend a pullback of troops in Iraq.
The CNN story just broke.

In a week that included comments from the media about Civil War in Iraq and Bush's wordspinning as a "New phase...since the bombing of the Mosque", to Senator McCain and George Bush calling for MORE troops in Iraq despite the mandate from the election... it looks like the report from the ISG will soon become public.  Read More »

News from Iraq, a reporters story, failed negotions

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

Just keeping track of whats going on down there.

This story broke my heart.

I left my home Monday.

As my family fled the fighting that's engulfed our neighborhood in Baghdad, I gazed out the car window, thinking that I might never again see the fruit stand off our street, the shops where my sisters and I bought soft drinks, the turquoise-domed mosque where we prayed in the holy month of Ramadan.  Read More »

Take a walk on the DARK SIDE--The Cheney side of the administration.

This guy was DRIVEN to grab more power than any other White House and any other Vice President ever before. He's secretive, sneaky, ornery, and corrupt. DOn't let his snarl make you think he's a nice guy.

How much does a Congressman make? How about thier staffer?

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

I found this:

Staff salaries for members of the House of Representatives. These are their staffers. They pick up the phone whne you call. THey do the research. They maintain the offices there. AND Washington DC is a hugely expensive place to live.

It's amazing. Do you have any idea of how much a Congressman or Congresswoman makes?
Well here ya go!

$165,200 WITH BENEFITS. (No wonder they open themselves up to lobbyists with such a cushy salary and job).

Is it somehow a class battle when Congressmen earn 165,200 per year and the staffers earn 1/10th of it? They can vote themselves a raise--which they FREQUENTLY DO and the members are free to not accept the wage increase--which many DO NOT DO! And yet FINALLY after 10 years of 40% COL increases and a stagnant minimum wage, the Democratic Congress is going to approve a minimum wage increase.

That means instead of earning approx. $10,500 and working 40 hours per week (poverty level is approx 15,500), their salary will finally make it up to around poverty level!

Congressmen 165,200 >>> Staffers >>>>> 15,000 or less>>>> fulltime minimum wage earners 10,500...

(and MILLIONS of Americans are minimum wage earners. Had the minimum wage increased at the same rate as CEO pay, it would be $22.08 today, according to the Institute for Policy Studies. (Washington Post, 8/30/99))

What do you think about this class divide? Is it socialism to try to even it out? And what about all the middle-class income families who are now unable to find jobs above 35k per year yet alone the 165,500 that Congressmen pay themselves?

Is public service only for elistists nowadays? (In case you're curious, many Congressmen become lobbyists when they retire or get voted out. Lobbyists earn--$300,000/year)  Read More »
