African American women in today's music videos ----- they are still oppressed!

This is a topic that was brought forth to us by our Women's Issues Club sponsor. She wanted us to discuss the images that are portrayed in todays music videos of African American women vs. Caucasion (sp?) women.

At the end of our discussion we had concluded that this music industry is run by the white population. The African American population in this country is a little over 11%; so for an artist to be in the top list, the white population would have to buy their cds. So why are so many African American are being degraded in these music videos. Well, the music industry is run by the White male population; these people will sell what they want to sell, and what brings in money. So, we know sex sells, so why is it only the African American and Latino women in these music videos stripping. Well, we dated the cause back to slavery. During slavery, white masters have raped thousands of black slaves. Their defense was that these women were originally seductive and sinful, and that is why it was not their fault. Thier wifez were respected and put in the pedastal, yet they raped the slaves because they were seductive and sinful. So that is exactly what is happening in these videos. African American are being stripped off their dignity and pride. These women, (I am not saying they are not choosing to this) are used as sexual objects; as at the time during slavery.  Read More »

How safe are women in college campuses? ---- A college covers up for the rapists!!!!

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •    •

What has the world turned into? To take the side of a rapist and dismiss a rapist victim from college.

I was watching 20/20 and it featured a story about The University of Colorado. After/During a party couple of women were raped by the football players. When the women came forward, they were dismissed from school.

I am tired and sick of the special treatment and advantages that these football players have received. Just because they are able to help with the reputation of the college does not make them gods. This is very disturbing to know that in a sanctuary for knowledge, these kinds of behaviors are condoned.  Read More »

War in Iran

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

As unbelievable as it seems, with a national election only weeks away, our sources in Washington continue to warn that the Bush Administration is making preparations for a military strike against Iran.

We learned last month about the orders for the USS Eisenhower, a nuclear aircraft carrier, to proceed to the Persian Gulf. Now within the past week we have learned that minesweepers are being sent there as well. This is an even more ominous sign, since such ships would not normally accompany a strike force on routine deployments. Credible sources such as Seymour Hirsh and Daniel Ellsberg have written about this threat, and reporters and editors from publications such as the New York Times and Wall Street Journal are beginning to echo those warnings.  Read More »

Trick or Treat ---- a halloween miracle

As we sit in our living room in front of our fire places, we are only worried about superficial problems. A new car maybe. We never seem to think about those who have nothing. No protection from the cold or the outside world. What about those who have no food in their stomach or have to work all day to earn a dollar a day? What about them?

This is your time to give back. To make somebody's halloween. Unicef has always been there to help children in the third world countries. This fall they are doing a fundraiser called the Trick or Treat for Unicef. I urge all of you to raise money during this month, so it can be sent to UNICEF.  Read More »

What can we do? ----Global Warming!!!

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •    •    •    •

Global Warming has been effecting us in many ways. More floods, tsunamis, and hurricanes. So, how can we improve the environment we live in today. Maybe by following some of the suggestions listed below.

1. Compact fluorescent bulbs. According to the Discovery Channel documentary, Global Warming - What You Need to Know with Tom Brokaw, one flourescent bulb replacing one regular light bulb is the equivalent of taking one million cars off the road for an entire year. That is the prevention of a lot of pollution.  Read More »

Carbon Dioxide from Power Plants

I do not know when and how we started building power plants. However, this advancement in our society has turned out to have negative effects. We are one of the few countries that are priviledged to have electricity at all times. Most of the U.S. carbon dioxide come from these plants that are burning fossil fuel for electricity. So, where do we go if we did not have electricity?  Read More »

Covering becomes oppression!!!!!!!!!!!

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •

I did not know that the act of covering has become a sign of oppression. This was inspired by the blog "being women is not gross."

"Although, im thankful that im not the women who have to cover every part of their body in public. I believe every women, every girl, in every race, is beautiful and I think its degrading when they're forced to cover up their beauty." (verbatim, from the blog).  Read More »
