Gastric Bypass is it safe?

Tagged:
Many have viewed gastric bypass as an alternative to weight loss, but is it safe?  There are a few ways to view it, first most doctors will attempt a calorie controlled-stirict diet before coming to any drastic decision.  The diet is very healty, and is in serving size which is hard to get used to at first.  The doctor will also prescribe a series of exercises to be done in correspondance to really help the weight loss process. However if after at least six months if the diet and exercise do not help much if at all, they will consider the surgery. Gastric bypass consists of taking the stomach and "stapling" it so that all that is left to hold the food is a small pouch, this will make the person feel full after eating only very small amounts of food. The downside to this?  There is a percentage that bleeding may occur, also that the wound may not heal properly, it will also leave a pretty bad scar, but some people even die from the procedure. Well if thats all, a scar it seems pretty simple doesn't it.....thats hardly the case, having the surgery, and if everything goes fine will not make things exactly better.  Excess skin resulting in rapid weight loss for obese people is a common result in everycase I've read about.  The skin won't shrink up because there is too much of it.  The only solution is more surgery to cut the excess skin off, resulting in even more scaring, usually on the arms, legs and middle.  And thats not all, people who undergo the surgery need to have counciling, to help them with the inner battle, the emotions of the entire process, depression somtimes occurs. So is it worth it?  Read More »

Is Head Start Really teaching the children?

I personally volunteered at a Head Start for a year. Before volunteering I heard of all the wonderful things Head Start prepares children for, such as life skills, and education preparing them for kindergarten. This is a private funded program that offers pre-school for disadvantaged (low-income) children, and children with special needs. However I was horrified when I learned that a five year old student who was about to take the kindergarten testing could not spell their name. I immediately began to teach this child, only to get yelled at by a worker, stating that I was not to teach the children anything, that Head Start was a place for children to learn social skills and that was it. Immediately after my shift I went to the local education committee who oversees the program and told them of my problem. Soon after things drastically changed, they began teaching the children colors, shapes, sizes, numbers, and the alphabet. I believe that every child has high potential and needs to be taught so they may reach it.  Read More »

Music: Will listening to classical music really improve your I.Q.?

Tagged:

Remember a few years ago when everyone who was expecting a baby ran out to buy the VHS or DVD of baby Mozart? Scientists were stating there was a link between classical music improving everyone’s I.Q. Well guess what…..they were wrong. Recent studies conclude that there aren’t any significant differences in babies who watch Baby Mozart tapes and babies who don’t watch it. Anyone who has seen on of the movies from the Baby Mozart collection, if you couldn’t understand some of those enormous words they were saying, your child probably couldn’t either.  Read More »

Time managment

I decided to write on what I’ve learned about stress management. This is my first semester that I really had the chance to be educated about how to handle my stressors. I would like students to know that college is much more difficult than high school. I don’t think high school adequately prepares students hoping to enter college, and it’s a enormous disadvantage and shock, I think this is why the drop out rate is so high for college freshman.  Read More »

Geriatric Nursing

Tagged:

I've recently read an article titled “Stress and Burnout of Nursing Staff Working with Geriatric Clients in Long-Term Care.”

Since I’m thinking of entering the nursing program next fall. This article discussed the three types of nurses in the hospital as follows, registered nurses (RN), licensed nurse practitioners (LPN), and certified nursing assistants (CNAs). This study was done among “252-bed nursing home.” They conducted surveys for all of the nurses to take to see which type suffered the most stress and burn outs. The patients ranged for suffering Alzheimer’s to critical care units. The test for this particular essay was also conducted at only one facility. After the tests were taken they calculated them and found that registered nurses suffered the most burnouts and stress factors, followed by certified nursing assistants, and lastly the licensed nurse practitioners. The article spoke of trying to differentiate between the factors that cause such stress and burn out such as age, sex, marital status, the different working environments etc. Though they did not answer those questions directly, only stating that those were not “significant” within the results. I liked how they concluded with some job sites providing training classes to help the nurses to deal with the stressors at work.

I felt that this article was informative and had good crediability because it conducted tests among the variety of nurses, however they only spoke of one specific geriatric nursing home. . I think that if they looked further into the subject and did multiple testing in several homes that they might be able to receive a stable conclusion.  Read More »

Education and Funding

Tagged:
I've recently done a few essays for an Education 100 class on this subject and was wondering what other's imput would be.   To begin the "No Child Left Behind Act" consists of children around 3-4 being able to enter pre-school and daycares in hopes that they'll learn things earlier.  The government began this, stating they would help fund it, however recently they decided to lessen their funding, stating that its costing too much now.  For those of you who may not know the recent debate about the P.R.O.M.I.S.E Scholarship, deciding whether or not to pay only partial funding for many students, or to pay the whole tuition for a few students.  Only a year after they began the scholarship they cut back on the amount they provided stating that too many people were eligible for it.  I'm confused.....the government can use-literally-billions of our tax dollars to send some satellite and data collecters into space to explore, take pictures of, collect data, etc.  Read More »

Me

I'm currently a sophomore at West Virginia University of Parkersburg, I'm trying to get any scholarship I can, hence me being here.  I'm currently working on an associate degree, and home to go on toward nursing. I'm currently single and waiting for my knight and shining armor to sweep me off my feet....ok a decent guy would do. I'm currently dedicated to my school work, since thats just about all I have time for.  I'm looking forward to trying to get into the nursing program because I think there are too many nurses that do it just for the money and not to help people.  I want to make some difference in the world before I leave it, even if its just by putting a smile on a few unhappy patients' faces, to know that I did my part in society and am working for the right reasons:  Read More »

What is Today Coming to?

What is today coming to when victims of abuse must hide themselves from their abusers, who may have once been lovers, spouses, friends, or even parents?  Yet the abuser is still free! Where is justice?   I moved from a large city to a small country setting where there aren't really any boundries of where one place ends and another begins.  In the city I seen children getting pregnant by their brothers, some gangs hangin around, so many murders happening everyday they didn't even list it anymore in the newspaper.  Yet in the country, ah it seems to lovely and quiet right? Wrong.  In the country behind closed doors there are many secrets, whether its a drunken man beating his wife, a controlling spouse who won't let thier "other half" speak in public unless its somthing they have permission to talk about, or the person who's had a bad day, has held it in and when they get home decide that whom they live with will be a substitute punching bag.  How do I know about all this you may ask?  I've seen behind closed doors, and more than one occasion have been behind a few.  Last time I upset the person I was living with, who I thought loved me, I ended up with a miscarriage and left in the hospital with a neckbrace.  A few days after the attack I had to face my attacker in the courthouse to get a restraining order, It was not granted.  Where is my attacker? Out having the time of his life doing it to other unsuspecting people.   Read More »
