Politics for the Upcoming Election

While my past few blogs have been very popular, albiet rather controversial and sensitive, I have decided to take a turn down a different road and steer away from religion for today. Don't worry, I'll be back to it in due time.

Today, I will tackle discussing political issues. With the midterm elections come up in a couple weeks, there are plenty of issues to vote about on this year's ballot. I've looked at the main issues from my state and will discuss them here.  Read More »

Religion: Good or Bad?

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •
I recently came across a post on a message board basically asking if religion in general caused harm or good. It was posted nearly four months ago, but was a fairly hot topic at the time, much like the debate about Israel and Lebanon is a hot topic now. I read the entire thread, and, not wanting to bring up a month old subject to debate it some, decided to just write my own journal entry about it. I also suspect it will be a good exercise in my ability to give reasoning and the like.  Read More »

Christians: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Tagged:  •    •    •

Let me start this blog by saying that I am Christian. I am a very secular Christian, in that I don't go to church every Sunday and don't follow any specific denomination's beliefs. But I am still a Christian. For now, anyway.

I'm sure everyone has seen some sort of group that goes out and tries to spread the word of the Lord. May they come in the form of Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Baptists, or any other denomination. This aspect of Christianity (Spread the Word to the World!) has always bothered me. I get annoyed with those that tell me that people will go to hell if they don't believe in Jesus. Furthermore, it annoys me to no end when people use the bible to damn the ideas of others, particularly with political ideas such as abortion and stem cell research. So, with that, I bring the ideas of the Good Christians, the Bad Christians, and the Ugly Christians.  Read More »

Breast Cancer and Lipstick

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

Geralyn Lucas was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was only 27. Most women don't get breast cancer until well into their 40's, possibly even later. Still, about every 3 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States, and it is the leading cancer among white and black women. Thousands of women die from this cancer every year. Early detection gives a woman a much higher chance of survival, though.  Read More »

'Mindless Eating'

Tagged:  •    •    •

In a report by 20/20 last night, John Stossel interviewed a professor at Cornell University, Brian Wansink, about mindless eating habits of Americans. Wansink described several experiments he did on his classes, testing the amount of food people take. He concluded that people generally eat more when they have larger plates or bowls, that breaking up a given amount of snacks into smaller portions typically leads to less eating, and that those with shorter, wider glasses typically drink more than those with taller, narrower glasses. Additionally, people generally eat more of a mix than of a single color of M&Ms or Jelly beans.  Read More »

Relationship Woes

Tagged:

So, tonight I had a really bad fight with my boyfriend. To the point where he, for the first time in our 2+ year relationship, seriously considered breaking it off. So I got to thinking. Are fights good for the well-being of a couple? I've always been of the group that thinks that fights are good for a relationship, and that any couple that doesn't fight isn't... natural, I suppose. This was confirmed by looking at my relationship, and the relationship of one of my friends. Let's call her Veronica, and him Logan. Now Veronica and Logan had been friends for a really long time before they finally admitted to each other that they liked each other and started a relationship. Throughout their relationship, they had a few minor disagreements, but they never let them grow into fights. They had been together for over a year when Logan decided that he was no longer in love with Veronica. They broke it off and she was devastated (I didn't talk to him at all after the breakup). Now, my boyfriend and I have several minor fights, ones that last a few minutes, and a couple major fights per month. Usually in our major fights, one or both of us briefly considers breaking up. But we've been together, happy as can be, for over two years now.  Read More »

The Need For Change in US Healthcare

I recently ran across an article in the New York Times describing how the United States spends more on health care than its European counterparts, but that they often have better quality care than we do. Heath care in Canada costs about $3300 per capita, compared to more than $6000 per capita here in the United States. And what's worse is that Canadians have universal health care. Everyone gets basic medical care, whereas in the US, there are thousands of people that are uninsured, and have no access to quality care. Obviously, this is something that needs to be fixed. And obviously, no matter what I say, the fixing of the problem is going to take a lot more effort than a simple blog entry. If the problem were simple enough that I could think up an answer, it would've already been fixed.  Read More »
