C.S. Lewis

"How monotonously alike all the great tyrants and conquerors have been: how gloriously different the saints." - C.S. Lewis "Mere Christianity"

I love this quote. No matter what personality you have or what type of a person you are you still have the ability to be somone amazing who impacts the world around you.

Oprah's show today

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

I'm not usually a huge fan of Oprah, but her show today was pretty good.  The princess of Jordan was there and the first woman president of Lyberia.  It was about women in Africa and Muslim countries and helping the poor.  What I really liked was a Sarah McLachlan video called "world on fire".  The video cost 15$ to make and the rest of the money that would have gone to the video went to different charities, hospitals and schools.  It is really neat because it shows what a producer, catering for the days they shoot the video, and other things that would go into making the videowould cost and then shows what that amount of money could od in other countries, like feeding children, education, housing, and rehabilitating Afgani widows.       Read More »

The Survivor Finale was Upestting...

I know that this is just my opinion, but I'm upset that Danielle screwed over Terri.  He should have won.  As soon as we saw that little nod and Aras jumped off.  We knew. Sad day. Short blog, but the episode isn't over.  Not that I will be happy with either way it can end.

Does Foreign Financial Aid Really Work?

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •

Last night on 20/20 John Stossel and Patrick McMenamin did a piece on foreign financial aid to Africa.  Many people, including Angelina Jolie, Bono, and Jeffery Sachs (Director of UN millennial project) say that what Africa needs is more financial support.  Other people are wondering where the 50 billion dollars that we gave this past year went.  Some of it may never have reached any starving, sick, or impoverished people, the governments in Africa often keep the money for themselves since it is given to them to distribute among the people as they see fit.  Journalist June Arunga- originally from Kenya- talked about the government’s corruption and the billions of dollars that are, in theory, stolen, even food aid is stolen.  So what do we do? Give more money? The same amount? Keep closer tabs on where it is all going?  At the end of the article they talked about private charities, which are much more apt to directly distribute food and money and keep closer tabs on where it is all going.  He names the Free Africa Foundation as one he would be willing to contribute to.  I am all for helping others, but it should just be done in an efficient way, maybe the UN giving money is more efficient than they gave it credit for, there are supporters who just say that more needs to be given, but is that really the best way to solve the poverty problem?  Read More »

Ah... censorship.

Last week everyone was wondering what happened when our school newspaper did not come out on time.  or really any time that week.  No one I had talked to had gotten one.  The past few weeks have been a big time for prospective students to come and visit our campus.  The administration decided that they did not want these prospective students seeing what was in our paper. So they left it out for twenty four hours and went around and picked them all up again, without warning so no one knew to get one.  Read More »

Thankyou

I want to start by saying this is not a statement of any kind going any direction in the prolife pro choice issue.  It is a thankyou.

I'm not sure who all reads these blogs.  I'm new to this, but I guess its mostly college students. So really the person I want to thank probably won't even read this, but this is the best way I know to thank her; to tell others what she did for me.  She gave me life.  I do not know my mother and probably never will.  My mother was sixteen when she had me, she had brown hair, and played the piano.  Until a while ago that was all I knew.  Them my adoptive mom gave me a letter from her. Here is her story:  When she found out she was pregnant she told her parents and was kicked out of her house.  For some reason she happened to walk into a church (as far as I know she had no religious background and wasn't a Christian).  Everyone there was nice, asked how she was doing and she told them.  This particular church had an outreach program for young unwed mothers.  They took her in,  gave her a place to live and a new home.  More than that they shared their faith with her, not only in words but in actions, and they worked with her and her parents to reconcile their broken relationship.  While she was living with the family she became a Christian and shortly after she had me she moved back in with her parents and I was adopted by wonderful parents.  I would not trade them for the world.   Read More »

Why Do I blog?

Why blog? Well. I started because who wouldn't write and read some posts for a chance at a acholarship?  Actually, I debated doing this because I have a xanga site and I hate it.  I never know what to write and I thought that this would not be any different, but the prospect of making my college education cheaper is enticing.  So I am giving it a try and Amazingly, I like it.  A lot in fact. I am quickly becoming as addicted to this as the facebook fad that swept across our school at the beggining of the semester.  I love reading about the current events and peoples opinions of what is really the issue.  Read More »
