What does it mean to be a student?

It's the dream of most American parents that their child goes to University and graduates with a degree. It's the dream that they recieve great grades, and leave with a great job. It's their dream that they step onto campus every single day - safetly- and return home unharmed. This week it's hard to do that at any university, as all our worlds were turned upside down on Monday.  Read More »

I lost my virginity at 16. I didn't love him, and he didn't love me. There were no rose petals, and it wasn't prom night. I didn't even see fireworks. BUT I used a condom.  Read More »

What am I doing here

I have friends all over the world. Prior to being at University I noticed the differences in education standards, but not too intensely. Now, I have begun to see the difference. In the states we have this amazing system worked out. We go to school (elementary, middle, sometimes high); those who graduated have a few or so directions, and those who don't chose from a list of millions.  Read More »

I'm a Middle Eastern Studies Major (poli sci). Along with the major comes tons, and tons of interesting classes, but none as much as Modern Islam has been. It has opened my eyes to a period of not only Islam, and the Middle East (and indonesia) but the entire world past the Classical years of Islam put together.  Read More »

new orleans

Last night, for the first time (I believe) a US President discussed Shiite Muslims at a news conference. Last night, our president made a disasterous mistake, but it isn't the first. A famous little city in the south was destroyed 15 months ago. New Orleans has yet to be repaired. A city in our United States of America is a living hell, and no one is doing anything to help it. Can you imagine checkpoints in your city? Can you imagine no control but a police state? 9 MURDERS IN 10 DAYS!!!  Read More »

There is little in the news recently that proves overwhelmingly exciting, even somewhat possitive, or worth debating. The President and his Iraq study group are no more than an annoyance; we all know nothing will come out of it? Did he learn anything from the 911 report? No. Sadly, the only story that even caught my attention was Mahmous Amedenijad's anti-semetism. Yesturday, he held a holocaust deniers convention.  Read More »

today's thoughts

Two stories caught my eye this morning when I logged onto sayfiereview.com- my favorite news souce in florida. One, was about the adition of more faith-based prisons. The other was about a gay-straight allaince issue is Okeechobee. Both stories, though obviously different, are closely connected here in Florida (and around this country) in a startling way.

So here's the deal. Governor Bush put in place the first faith based prison in the US, and now we have 3. After a number of years a panel, which he has set up, is asking for more. Why? Because they feel that after this voluntary program inmates are less likely to revert back to crime. Science says otherwise. In fact, there is absolutely no evidence--at all-- that this kind of program works. As usual, Governor Bush is lounging around with the Christian right, instead of figuring out ways to get out fourth graders reading, writing, and adding.  Read More »
