Opinion vs. Opinionated

Tagged:  •

Yes, there is a big difference. Everyone has their opinions. But exactly defines people as opinionated or open-minded?

Why are some people so violently overbearing? It could simply be attributed to their individual personality, but that's not the end of it. Lack of education and ignorance (not always the same thing) are major factors in bigotedness and intolerance to others. When I was in middle school, I proudly called myself opinionated. Now that past fact embarrasses me. I firmly think that one of the biggests parts of a bigoted viewpoint is immaturity.  Most opinionated people hold another thing in common - they don't back up their opinions well, if at all. When you learn more of the facts about the subject you have such a strong opinion on, most of the time it becomes easier to be tolerant and more relaxed about what you believe in. Besides, just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean that you are going to lose your opinion. So don't be so quick to attack and react calmly when an opinionated person attacks you.

Female Genital Cutting

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

This is an issue that I found about a year ago and recently wrote an essay on. In the process, I found out that many people have no idea that this is going on, especially high school students. So I thought that I should bring it up on this website.

In several African countries, culture demands that women and girls be circumcised before marriage, usually between the ages of 4 and 12. They cut off the external genital organ. Often, this procedure is taken to the extremes of infibulation, where the remaining labia are sewn together with a tiny hole for urination and menstration. Why?

How practical is this contest?

People should not be awarded a scholarship because they can spend their day writing countless blogs filled with ignorance or petty selfish concerns. I'm new here, but this should be blogging for PROGRESS, meaning that even if you do address issues, you should offer solutions, or at least and educated, tolerant insight on the subject. I've enjoyed reading many of these because it's a blog system that is filled with more intellegent, thinking, and/or knowledge-seeking people who want to find out more about the world around them and what they can do in society, as opposed to most other blogging websites.

One simple thing everyone can do!

Since this website is about students trying to make progress in the world, I would like to publicize a simple thing that everyone here can do to make a difference.

Visit The Hunger Site at www.thehungersite.com. With one click, you can provide 1.1 cups of staple food for a hungry child. While you are there, also click on the buttons for funding mammograms for those who can't afford it so they can prevent breast cancer, child health and literacy, saving the rainforest and feeding animals in shelters.
