Shaking Hands

This is kind of late, but last Tuesday, I voted.  It was my first time.  To be honest, it was difficult deciding many of the propositions.  There's so much at stake when we vote!  So much that can change.  My Intro to Political Science class rode a bus to downtown San Diego at 9:30 at night.  It was exciting.  There were so many people there at Election Central, from businessmen to children to people dressed fancily to union workers to students.  There were news stations around the border of the room and the California election results were posted every second on a huge screen.  Sometimes it was fun to just observe the people.

Why should we vote?

Sometimes I'm afraid to speak.  I don't want to be rejected by my friends; sometimes the scariest thing we can do is be honest.  Voting is like speaking.  It's the process of turning our thoughts and dreams of how the world should be into skin and bones.

I intend to vote in the upcoming elections.  Today my friend reminded me that if we don’t vote, we have no right to complain about the way things are.  I agree with him; I am only afraid that I am not well-informed enough on the propositions and the candidates.  I need to study an unbiased guide explaining the positions of each of the people running, and the proposals.

Whenever I feel moved to vote, it is because I want to see changes in the country, in my city.  I want to know that the country in which I live has the right priorities and is taking action to serve its people, especially those who are normally forgotten about.  I know it sounds arrogant to think I know what is right, but I try my best to align my positions with what Jesus and his followers promoted.  I think his revolutionary movement to provide healing to the sick and dignity to the oppressed is needed still, today.  I just wonder how to do it.  The difficulty is the 2,000 years between us – would Jesus have encouraged voting if he lived in a democracy?  Would he run for governor?  Would he encourage his followers to?
