Sometimes I wonder just how necessary it really is to learn another language.
It's often a requirement in schools. I hear people always give the advice 'Well, you should learn another language'. But in reality, what comes of it? Does it do more than enhance your ability to communicate with others? Does it make you smarter?
No, it's not.
A few years ago in my Human Geography class, a girl argued that the US (or it could have been another country in practice for Model UN) should not send any type of aid to countries that are in need of it because, in essence, it's the fault of the government and/or people of that country.
It's their own problem, and we should have no hand in fixing it.
The image is a famous one. The image of 'Tiananmen Square' that comes to mind for most people is usually just one: the image of one man standing boldly in front of a line of tanks. Who was he? What was his fate? Was there a point in what he did?
