Those of you that have come in contact with me over the years on ProU know that I have some pretty staunch beliefs regarding parenting. Some may even say that they are borderline conservative (and I'm a Democrat, gasp!).

Elderly in U.S. at Highest Risk of Suicide
Not long after 72-year-old Anne Beale Golson had retired on disability from her job as a librarian, she put a stack of paid bills out for the mail, hung up a freshly pressed outfit and taped a note to the front of the house.
"Don't come in by yourself. Get somebody to come with you. Sorry, Love Beale."

Many cities catching on to the "green" trend.
We all know from watching celebs zip around Hollywood in their Prius's that "going green" is the "it" trend of the moment. And not only has it taken off among the jet-set and those who worship them, big cities and companies are also catching on and doing their part by building, driving, and solar-powering in record numbers.

Tidbits from My Local Opinion Page: Part 2
Once again, the good citizens of Salina, Kansas offer us some entertainment through their phoned-in statements to our local paper, the Salina Journal.
"I can't burn my leaves. I can't burn my trash. That's pollution. But if I burnt 8 bazillion tons of coal out in western Kansas and made a million bucks, that's progress."

How do YOU drive?
That may seem like a strange question, but just listen to this: A young woman in a brand new Toyota Camry is cruising along on the interstate at an average speed of 48 miles per hour, never topping 60 mph, accelerating slowly and only driving on perfect 75-degree days, with the windows down. And from all this she ekes out 34 miles per gallon.

I think that many of us can agree that these days, we the people are desensitized to war. For many of us, there hasn't been a time in our lives when there wasn't a conflict going on somewhere. Ever since WWII, there has been an ever-present tension between countries, many times involving the good ol' USA.

Tidbits from My Local Opinion Page: Part 1
First of all, I'd like to take this opportunity to say that the staff of my local paper is the most talented I have seen. A few design flaws notwithstanding, the Salina Journal is very well written and well edited, and their opinion section is one of the most entertaining that I have ever seen. (my hometown of Derby didn't even have an opinion line: afraid of what people might think?)

Sebelius is Bringing Kansas Into the Modern World! What's the Problem?
For those of you who (pardon the accent) "ain't from around here," I'd better fill you in a little bit on the political situation in the great state of Kansas.
For the last two terms, Democratic Governor Kathleen Sebelius has done a great job, in my opinion, of bringing my very Republican-dominated state into the 21st century.
