Banning Abortion Would Kill More People

Abortion is murder, apparently.

It should be illegal, apparently.

If abortion is made completely illegal, it won't stop it from happening.

If women are desperate, they will do anything to get rid of the mass of tissue growing inside them.. drinking toxic liquids, using a hanger, going across country borders.  We have to keep abortion, at least first trimester abortions, legal.  If we do not, many more women will risk their lives.  Read More »

Wasn't Jesus a Liberal?

Tagged:  •    •    •

I found an article with this title, and, although I'm sparing you from reading it because it's so lengthy, I thought it brought up very valid points.

Jesus argued for dignity and justice for all people.  He didn't say that the poor suck and deserve what they've gotten and the rich can just enjoy their money now and never worry about anyone else.  He advocated helping one another, equality among men and women.  He said everyone should be cared for by one another.   Read More »

Peace- attainable or abstract?

Peace is an ideal, sure, but is it attainable?

I say yes.  However, I've recently heard someone dare to say that peace is nonexistent, and will never be acquired.  To him, peace seems to mean conformity and agreement on everything.  Since no one can agree on what peace means, let alone how to achieve it, we could never really live in a peaceful world.

I cannot believe this.  First of all, agreement and conformity aren't peace, they're boring.  What kind of a world would we live in if everyone agreed on everything and no one questioned anything?  Second, just because we disagree does not mean that we can't live in peace, although it would be more difficult.  Read More »

Bigotry?

In the past week, with Bush's rally against gay marriage and attempts to federally ban it, I have heard a lot of accusations of bigotry and discrimination.  I've also heard lame attempts at defending the anti-gay stance.  Such attempts include, "it's not discrimination, it's protection of an institution," or "they can do whatever they want, we're not limiting their rights, they just have to maintain a relationship outside of wedlock to be recognized."   Read More »

Do You Know The Muffin Man?

So, I'm assuming most people across the country have heard about the tainted muffin scandal at Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, my alma mater.  I read today that the students who delivered the muffins laced with THC have had their crime upgraded to a felony.  I'm mostly interested in what you have to say.  I know former alumni and current students of the school actually think this whole thing is pretty funny, and while I think the idea of getting all the teachers high is fairly humorous, I'm not sure how I really feel about it.  I think it was semi-dangerous, sending one of the sweetest ladies in the world to the hospital with a heart condition, but I really don't think 20 years in prison is an appropriate punishment.   Read More »

Sportsmanship is a thing of the past.

Basketball playoff's... they're a pretty funny thing.

I'm from Dallas, and I would be lying if I said I didn't watch every single game and root for the Mavericks and hold a small grudge against anyone or anything from Phoenix.  When, however, does our loyalty to a sports team go too far?

I was in San Antonio for 3 of the 7 games from the 2nd series... I feared for my life.  I went to a bar with some friends to watch the games, and every single time, I noticed people giving me dirty looks for smiling when Nowitski made a shot or Duncan missed... I wasn't even making a really big deal about it.  Read More »

Hi, I'm sorry. I didn't realize we were still stuck in the 19th century.

On average, American women make 76 cents for every dollar made my men in the exact same position.  However, when we go to the store, we are expected to pay the same price, more in some cases.  We say that we're an equal society, and we spend time fighting for justice, and then we show bias in outrageous ways such as a paycheck.

When are we going to be a truly equal society?  When can I walk out the door and feel equal to my brothers and sisters, rather than inferior or superior.  What does it take to realize that we're all the same?  We always talk about all the progress that has been made in the past 50 or 100 years concerning women's rights, but look how much there is to do.  I hear my guy friends talk about how we can never have a female president because every time she has pms she'll blow up a country.  That's crap.  Look who we've got in the presidency now, it seems to me he's been pmsing for 6 years now.   Read More »

Unfair Welfare

Our country's values seem to encourage individualism, success and materialism rather than community, equality and generosity.
For over two centuries, Americans have worked to build this "American Dream," the idea that we can be successful, even from the most meager beginnings.  Is this dream as accessible as we like to think it is?  For people in poverty in America, programs exist that are meant to lift them out of their situation.  How effective are these programs, and are they beneficial to their applicants?  Read More »
