1 Billion Illiterate Individuals Today

Tagged:  •    •    •

There are about 1 billion illiterate adults in the world today. Think of it. That’s about 1/6th of the world’s population. We always hear about lots of other issues, but is illiteracy ever really highlighted? Not really. I think it’s mostly because people don’t realize how huge a problem it is and the implications of such a large number of people being uneducated. In this post, I’ll help define the problem and present an ACTUAL project that I undertook and that you can too in order to make an impact on world illiteracy. I’m the founder of Project Literacy, a student initiative to decrease illiteracy in the world today.

$10 million dollars...

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

...if you can make improvements in our current knowledge/use/etc of hydrogen fuel. This money is being awarded by the House, and was recently announced. I talked about this in my history class today but the award was obviously targeted to large companies and scientists. But it's interesting.

Take on plagiarism buzz

Tagged:  •    •

There is a lot of buzz recently about the writer who plagiarized heavily for her book as a Harvard sophomore. I just want to argue a little nuance of why I think she should be punished severely. I think she thought she could easily get away with it and went on her happy way with all the fame she got as only a sophomore in college. Based off of the articles I have read, I think that the fact that she doesn't seem sincerely apologetic for plagiarizing means that she would have done it again if she had the chance. I have no sympathy for her, at all.

Current Events in School

Tagged:  •    •    •

In my high school in two different classes we hold current events discussions every week. I think more high schools should do this because for one it helps to inform the masses of students that might not normally care but now do because it takes up class time...me excluded of course.

Algae Revolution

Tagged:  •    •    •

Could you imagine a world where no one used gasoline? I have recently been interested in the applications of algae in our society. Did you know, you can use algae to treat sewage, increase food supplies, and even generate energy? Wow what a package. Scientists are implementing algae ponds in countries like India and Africa to clean waste and feed starving individuals.

I think this should be pushed to be implemented into more countries. It is just what we need.
