Senate Willing to Pass Immigration Bill

The Senate is set to OK an Immigration bill backed by Bush. The bill will fine buisnesses toughly who hire illegal immigrants and require buisnesses to check Social Security numbers and immigration status of all new hires within 18 months.

I can see both the pros and cons of this bill. On the one hand, if employers are not allowed to hire illegal immigrants and we crack down on that, they can't exploit them. This would help keep illegal immigrants safe from exploitation. But, on the other hand, these people DO need jobs. And the jobs they're doing are keeping our economy level headed. If this new bill put them all out of work, we might see some problems with that in the future. Read More »

Children Glued To TV

Tagged: •

I've not updated in awhile, which is really bad. But I've been semi-busy and it honestly slipped my mind. Hopefully, I'll get better.

There was a study done about kids watching TV that found that a third of kids (babies to six years old) live in a house where the T.V. is on all the time. I don't feel as though the TV watching is a problem, but I do feel like what they're watching is a problem. I watched TV when I was a kid but my mother encouraged me to watch Discovery and learning channels more than cartoons. I'd watch things that taught me something during smaller ages. Read More »

Vegetarianism

Tagged: •

Today I thought I'd write about why exactly I'm partially vegetarian. I've never been one to say, "Aww, the poor animals!" Not that there's something wrong with that. I used to be very pro-meat. :P

I mentioned before, in my first blog, about reading Fast Food Nation. Well, that book gave detailed but not Upton Sinclair detailed information about the meatpacking industry and just how much control the government and the FDA have over tainted meat. It had the facts about E Coli 157:OH7, one of the viral strains of E Coli that's particularly harmful. All of it made me sick to my stomach. Now, usually, I don't eat meat. I do eat a bit of fish now and then. And it's not really because I'm keeping myself from eating meat entirely.... it's just that I don't like it anymore. Read More »

Establishing English As The National Language

Tagged: •

There's a new debate resurfacing on establishing English as the national language of the United States. Apparently this debate has gone on before but I'm too young to remember it.

So you've got people on one side who say that it's not fair to impose this on people because we have a lot of immigrants who speak other languages that don't have the time/money to learn to speak English. I think it's funny that this debate is resurfacing around all this Immigration controversy. Coincidence? Probably not. Anyway, you've got the other side who say most Americans speak English and if they don't they should because it's part of becoming an American, which apparently means saying goodbye to any culture you might have and embracing a new suburban mediocre consumer lifestyle. My position? Why bother? So you've got a big government man coming on a press conference saying, "We herby as the officials of such and such official government organization with authority state English is the national language of these United States". Do you really think people not speaking English would care, let alone understand what the hell you're saying? Read More »

Religious Liberals

I couldn't write yesterday because I was busy and when I finally got on it wasn't working, which sucked. So I'll make two entries today.

There's a story on msnbc.com here about religious liberals. And how they're tired of what's portrayed as "Christian values," being used to back up anti-same-sex marriage and anti-abortion campaigns. Read More »

Gay Marriage Ban

Tagged: •

A Senate panel OKed the gay marriage ban passing through the Senate today. The passage of the bill in general looks unlikey... but still. This is about principle.

I try and I try and I try but I can't for the life of me comprehend why in the hell people are so against same-sex marriage. I honestly don't get it.

I understand the religious aspect of it. Okay, the Bible says yada yada yada, I get it. But you know what? You shouldn't be allowed to put religion in government. Religion is faith. It's not fact. And only factual evidence against it should be allowed. I respect people with faith, but you know what, the Bible can be interpreted 1,000,000,000 different ways and not everyone even believes in the Bible. Some people are Islamic, Hindu, etc. You can't use one or any religion as a basis for law because it's discriminitory. I respect you for having faith, but it's not okay for you to use that to make laws and shove your way of living down my throat. Read More »

$70 Billion Tax Cut

Bush signed a $70 Billion dollar tax cut today.

I don't have any tax opinions, mostly because I haven't started paying taxes yet so I have no idea how much is taken, what it's used for, etc. But what I do know, from history, is that trickle down economics don't work. It's just a lame excuse for rich presidents to benefit their friends. It really pisses me off because people who are poor shouldn't HAVE to pay as much tax as rich people. They probably own nothing, they take up little space, they work hard, etc. They shouldn't have to pay as much taxes as rich people do. Read More »

9/11 Pentagon Plane Video Revealed

Today, Tuesday, videos of a plane crashing into the Pentagon were released due to the Freedom of Information Act.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12818225/

I've seen and heard a lot of stuff about 9/11, and I try to keep a middle ground in what I believe. Usually because if a story can be swayed one way it can be swayed the other regardless of good intentions. I'm a writer so I know the importance of context and the way you say things. Read More »
