Indonesian Volcano Eruption

Tagged:  •    •

Okay, so Mount Merapi volcano hasn't erupted quite yet, not severely, but it is sprewing ash and debris, and boy is it pretty looking! I'm a sucker for fiery things... the people living in the areas surrounding it have been ordered to evacuate. There has been steady lava flow from the giant, which scientists have been carefully observing.

So many people could die if they don't heed the warnings to get out of the area, it's really very sad and almost frightening. Fortunately I live near no volcanos... so there are no worries for me. Scary thing is, the beast has been inactive for years. Just like normal though it has come back to life with the volcanic tremors to go along with it. Fun stuff, ain't it?

It last erupted twelve years ago killing only sixty people, unlike the over 1000 when it erupted in 1930. I'm glad I don't live there... Mount Merapi is also one of the volcanos in the Ring of Fire, and is one of almost one hundred thirty active volcanos in Indonesia alone. Over a hundred volcanos. Scaryness... I'm glad there are ways we can prevent as many fatalities. Science is definately a big help... :) Yay for volcanologists! I used to want to be one...

Remember Those Two Steel Beams?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12778974/

Does anyone else remember those two steel beams that were left standing after the Twin Towers had crumbled down. It was an amazing sight to many religious people who use the cross as a sign of their faith, and still amazing to others who didn't, like me. I think it's our job to keep those two beams in the shape they were left in after the attack... it's a dedication to what happened there, and helps us remember in a materialistic (not bad materialistic) way.  Read More »

Rat Poison and Teenagers

So... I realize that they said the girl had psychological issues with distinguishing right from wrong but this is so messed up. When does a person begin to think that killing someone for putting shaving cream in their hair is right? How does that come off as not a bad thing to do?

Then again I do have to take into account how a person's psyche may opperate. There are people out there that don't exactly function as society would have them. This is only a prime example of that. It does however make me sad... however, it's very inventive for a twelve/thirteen year old. Honestly at that age I don't think many would even give a thought to using rat poison...  Read More »

Hiroshima and Nagasaki- Little Boy and Fat Man

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

For the past few days we have been learning about World War II in school, and yesterday and today we watched a video on the Enola Gay and atomic bombs. I learned quite a bit considering I slept through half the movie... >< Afterwards we were asked to have small group discussions as to what seven different groups of people would have said about the dropping of the atomic bomb and why. More specifically, would they have supported it and why or why not. Keep in mind, the other option was to invade Japan. Well, here are my answers as far as I can remember.

1. Japanese civilians- Not supportive. This is so because they would most likely see no reason for us to bomb them because it's their government and military that hurt us, not them. They are the innocents in the situation, and thus do not need to die. There's no reason to kill one who has done nothing to you, thus they would not have agreed with the dropping of the atomic bombs (aka: Little Boy and Fat Man).

2. American soldiers- Definitely supportive. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a specific attack that killed many American soldiers. These are their brethren and there'd be almost no way anyone would not want to get revenge for what was done to those men and women and the country as a whole. They had reason for wanting the Japanese to feel their wrath, and it would have been easily justified. It also saves their lives because if they invaded Japan there would be more loss of life on both sides than in dropping bombs and hoping for a retreat from the war.

3. American scientists- Mixed support. Some would probably have wanted to drop the bombs, where as others would have no. There are two sides to the equation because for one it has to be considered that some scientists are in the military. Thus the are American soldiers as well, which would mean they'd probably want revenge too. Then you have the scientists that have witnessed the power of the bomb and know it's capabilities, but do not want to kill all of those people because it would weigh on their consciousnesses (sp?). As well as them you have those who have seen the power and are completely supportive because they want to get back at Japan for what they did to our people and us.

4. Pentagon Officials- Supportive beyond a doubt. The attack was on their country, the turf which they are bound to protect. They would be supportive because they are a main ‘faction’ of the government, and largely involved with the military. Because they have so much intelligence they are more than likely going to be supportive of the dropping of the atomic bombs. It gets revenge, and will be a better bet than an invasion of Japan would be.  Read More »

"One Nation, Under -God-"

Tagged:  •    •

"I pledge alegiance to the flag of the United States of America. Unto the republic, for which it stands, one nation under -God- with liberty and justice for all."

Those few words which students are required to stand for (generally) in the morning or during school sometime. Is that such a hard thing to do, honestly?

I personally am not Christian, which was the religion this country was founded upon, however I am also not offended by the pledge of allegiance. The United States of America is based upon christian (I bounce back and forth between capitalization) morals, which don't necessarily have to be considered christian. For the sake of our founding though we'll go with that for now. In any case, off of that tangent, Why would someone want to go against the things their country was originally founded upon. Sure, things do change, but not something like the pledge of allegiance. It's the pledge for the Goddess' sake!

Men and women have fought in wars and died defending the country they pledged allegiance to every morning in school when they were younger. Taking the word -God- out of the pledge because a lot of people evidentially find it offensive would be a travesty, a mockery of everything they've done and could have or did die for! I've heard for my grandfather that he will not see a single word edited or removed from the pledge of allegiance because he fought for this country and what is was founded upon. The pledge is one of those things.

People shouldn't really get offended anyways. For one thing, they can take it into their own religion and use that. If your athiest or agnostic you can always opt out from saying the word, or opt out from saying the pledge, which anyone can do. For someone like me who is polythestic, think of it as only one of the Gods or Goddesses that you 'worship'. It's really not that hard!

So I ask you, why would anyone want to change something our country was built upon just because of a single word? It's stupid.

I found this story to be incredibly amusing, however I do realize that is was a serious thing. If it had been asetone leaking that would not have been a good thing... given I have no idea what it could do, but from the reaction I'm betting it would have been bad. Interesting story. Peaked my interest and my amusement levels. ^^

Younger Times- Hopscotch and Changing

Rainbows and lollipops,
snow and bicycles too
all of them memories
shared with you.

Bunnies from hats
and clowns with red noses,
polka dotted pink elephants
and bright green roses.

Three of us after
drawing chalk art
never daring to think
we'd grow up, and grow apart.

(To read the entire program click here: http://allpoetry.com/Poem/1947118.)

It's really unfortunate, but we all have to realize that life probably isn't going to go exactly as we had planned. When we're little we think we're always going to be with our friends, and that life is going to be like a game of hopscotch. We're going to hop right on through. Unfortunately there's another side we don't realize. If you fall off the chalk made game it's a stumble off of the beaten path.

On the topic of the poem, we need to realize that things aren't always perfect. Relationships fall apart, and so can many other things we have to deal with. Jobs, friendships, marriages, education. Anything has the ability to fall apart of fall away depending on how you deal with it, or how things play out in the long run.

I had two best friends when I was younger. I completely lost contact with one of them three years after I moved away, and the other one I think hates me right now because of what I've changed to be. We were once very similiar, and now that my life has changed so have I. She doesn't like it, and it's forced us even further apart to the point of dislike vs. hatred. I miss her, and I miss my other friend too, but I've realized that I need to move on. And I have. It doesn't bother me, to be honest I laugh it off now. :)

Life doesn't always play out perfectly. Look back on your childhood... things back then were insanely different than they are now most likely. It's like a game of hop scotch. 1, 2, 3 and 4, 5 6 and 7, 8, 9, 10. Turn around: 10, 9, 8 and 7, you stumble and fall. You never know what life will throw at you, or what rocky stumbles you'll go through. Keep your chin up and bear it. Things are bound to change regardless.  Read More »

Human Nature and the Best of the Best

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

Generally human beings are naturally pushed ahead to be the best they can be. Our minds attempt to tell us that we have to get ahead of the game, or fight our way to the top so that we can be the very best. It's human nature to want to be the best. I'm the same way, even though I sometimes really wish I wasn't.

So, is it really possible? I mean, you can take a look at all of the people who have achieved so much. They're millionaires, billionaires even, and they have almost anything they could ever ask for; there are the huge homes, luxury vehicles, vacation homes, a lovely wife or husband and kids if they want them, there's the latest technology, it seems like the list never ends. However, you look at a lot of these people (not necessarily all of them) and they aren't really happy.  Read More »
