Thinking for oneself

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

Philosophy pisses me off.  People become so obsessed with particular authors that they seem to become devoid of any original thought, idolizing long dead fellows as their gods.  What they don't realize, however, is that these people they love so much are just that: people.  The only thing different about these philosophers is that they happened to write down their thoughts, and then coincidently pay hundreds of dollars to get them published.  This does not make then geniuses; this makes them practical.  Read More »

Life is like a box of chocolates.

As little kids, I'm sure most, if not all, of us were asked the troubling question of, "what do you want to be when you grow up?"  It was probably pretty easy to answer way back when.  Apparently I wanted to be a paleontologist at the ripe old age of five (and yes, I did actually say "paleontologist" back then; I was more or less fanatically obsessed with dinosaurs, which, now witnessing in one of my cousins, I realize must have been kind of creepy for adults).  Paleontology has now evolved into Anthropology with a minor in Archaeology and Biology.  But what do I really want to do with this career choice?  I guess I have seven more years left to find out--enough time to get me through my doctorate's dissertation.  Read More »

Fastweb

So apparently Fastweb has re-advertised this website for scholarship purposes.  That's great, really.

BUT READ THE ARCHIVES.  We have had something like 3 abortion posts every day, two Jesus posts a day, and around three posts about illegal immigrants a day.  It's great that you all love unborn children, God, and have a standpoint concerning immigrants, but please please PLEASE flip a few pages back and post about your faith in them THERE.  It is clogging up the front page, and clogging up the server.  Multiple posts are why EVERYTHING IS LAGGING.  Hitting submit a gazillion times won't do any good; develop some patience.  It'll go through, it's just going to take a minute since everyone is whipping out posts in order to get the maximum amount of points.  Read More »

Advice

Tagged:  •

Hokay.  There seems to be a giant new influx of members.  And that's fantastic; new meat and all that.

But please, please, PLEASE read back a page or so before posting.  In two days there have been something like three different abortion threads, and two Jesus threads, both of which have been beaten to death with giant clubs a little while back.  Interested in hearing what the angry mob had to say?  Click on people's names and then click "track".  You'll probably find the threads amongst those lists, which makes them easier to find than sifting through tons of pages.  Also, please don't post things that probably would be better fit on myspace.  Or triple post.

Pretty much: think before you post. Please.  It's getting kind of redundant.

Kinship ties: a new world

With the new age of technology comes a new world of reproductive issues.  It is now common practice to use artificialm insemination, intro vitro fertilization, embryo adoption, and surrogate mothers.  Infertile families now have the options of many different ways to have children, depending on who is infertile, and how much money they have in the bank.  If the husband is sterile but the woman fully capable of conceiving, then fine!  We have sperm for you.  If the woman is sterile but capable of bearing a child, and the husband is fine, then great!  We have an egg for you.  If both parties are sterile and the woman able to carry, then fine!  We have a petri dish, egg, and sperm.  Woman unable to carry? It's all right!  Here's your surrogate mother.  Read More »

Hokay, so.

First of all, there are a lot of people I've seen come out of the woodwork now that there is an iPod on the line.  It's funny how something shiny will really pique the interest of those who are usually quiet.  I really hope that shiny thingamijigger goes to someone cool, like Caughtaglimpse, Jacqulyn, Ramognino, Kdpartington, or Cadet.  There are few people I've left out of the list, but my head is stuffed up with the mighty powers of Zyrtec (mmm, the sweet smell of allergies).  They really voice their opinions in their own ways, and I admire that.   Read More »

Why I hate FAFSA.

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •    •    •    •

For background information, I am considered an independent.  My mother has contributed nothing to my income, and I've been living away from her for over a year.  What about my father, you may ask.  Well, he's dead.  So don't even bring him up.  Thanks.

However, FAFSA still expects her to contribute a great sum of money towards my education.  For this reason, I am not eligible for any pell grants or government loans.  I am PISSED.  It is extremely arrogant of the government to assume just because my mother makes a living, she is going to contribute to my education fund.  She has flat out told me, several times, that since she was "never offered the opportunity" that she is not "going to offer it to [me]".  In layman's terms, since her family never paid anything towards her education (which is complete bullshit, my father's mother helped her earn her RN degree three years ago when she decided she wanted to go back to college), she's not going to give a penny in my direction.  Read More »
