This Site = Big Disappointment

I joined this site at the beginning of the spring scholarship competition and actually attempted the competition, which meant I spent an unreasonably large amount of time on this site. But I gave up on the scholarship when I realized something. A lot of people on this site are dumb. Some of them are really dumb. I see tons of posts that argue for ideas I already take for granted like "racism is bad" or "we should reduce our oil consumption" without adding any new insight to the argument. On April 18th, 2007, students and teachers nationwide will take a day of silence to echo the silence that LGBT students experience everyday. I encourage you to join them and me in taking a day of silence to support the young LGBT community.  Read More »

In April 2005, one of Alabama's Republican lawmakers, Gerald Allen sponsored a bill that would prevent public school libraries from buying new copies of books or plays by gay authors or about gay characters. "I don't look at it as censorship," says Allen.  Read More »

Paul and Juan Go to Harvard

Tagged:  •    •

At my high school, we all intuitively knew that being not white gave you a better chance of getting into a good college. That it made you more special. Anyone could get good grades, but if you were Latino and passed a bunch of AP tests, that would make colleges take a second look. I knew two guys in high school, Paul and Juan, that were amazing people with major accomplishments.  Read More »
