NBA Season Preview (well, it's sort of a preview)

Tagged:  •

I don't know if anyone else around here is into sports, but I decided to write a post about something that I actually know about:  basketball.

The new NBA season tips off on October 31...this Tuesday.  So is it going to be trick or treat?  Plenty of treats for basketball fans, as the *new Ben Wallace look* Chicago Bulls take on the defending champs (aka Dwyane Wade's team), the Miami Heat.  I really respect Ben Wallace as a player, and I'm looking for him to have a superb season.  I think this is Chicago's year, personally.  The white boy with skills, Kirk Hinrich, will be leading the way, along with scoring machines Ben Gordon and Luol Deng, not to mention some other solid ball players.

Oaxaca, Mexico: It's beautiful but it's making headlines

Tagged:  •    •

Oaxaca, Mexico has experienced protests by teachers the past few months.  The teachers went on strike in May because they wanted higher pay.  There was much violence in June, before I visited the city.  Yes folks, the dumb Christian has ventured and had cultural experiences apart from ones she is used to.  I was in Oaxaca for the second time back in July, with a group of other students.  We weren't aware of what was going on in the city.  It was kind of scary going down into the centro, where protesters would stand around.  Even though no fights broke out while we were there (that we knew of), the tension was there.  We came just after some bloody epidemics had taken place, and the signs were everywhere (literally).  Protesters, vendors selling videotapes of the violence, pictures of blood stains where the bodies had lain, red substances on the street that we thought might be those stains, and graffiti that read, "TOURIST GO HOME."  We never quite figured much of this out, but there were political cartoons and signs that were attacking a Mexican governor of some sort.  One of my friends actually ripped one off of the wall to keep.

A Quick Apology

Tagged:

I'll admit that I didn't think some things through and I was a little too harsh on my last post.  I really wasn't trying to cram anything down anybody's throat, but I think it looked that way.  It's just that I always sit by and let others bash my faith, in front of me.  Sometimes it's really hard.  And as much as they want to argue, I was not trying to target and offend atheists, although it looks like I did.  I know some pretty awesome atheists that I get along with really well.  I'm one of those people who you would probably get along with in real life, but maybe not on here because on here I have a little bit more of an outlet to say things, and I'm also one of those people who gets in trouble if they say too much.  It comes back to bite me all the time.

My Views on Christianity: Part I

Tagged:  •    •

Hello, I’m here to share with all who read this a little bit about Christianity.  I am doing so because I continually read and hear words spoken by people who hate Christians, who don’t think Christianity makes sense, and who hate against Christ right in front of my face.  I find that many of those who do not believe in God set out to note the flaws of Christianity.  I was conversing with someone a few months ago who I thought was a Christian.  He is atheist and goes to church to make his mother happy.  Anyway, he immediately started telling me all of these flaws in Christianity and why God doesn’t exist and all of this.  Even if I didn’t believe in someone else’s faith or religion, I wouldn’t sit there and tell them why it was all wrong!  Surely people have better sense than that?  This guy is not the only one I’ve come across who does that; several others continue to point out the flaws of Christianity in front of Christians.  What they should be talking about are the flaws of Christians, not the flaws of Christianity.  “Christians” are the ones who are causing people to hate God and hate Christianity because of their actions.

President Bush and the U.S.-Mexico Border Fence

Tagged:  •

President Bush signed a bill earlier today to build a 700 mile fence on our southern border with Mexico.  The newly elected Mexican president, Felipe Calderon, expressed disapproval for the signing of the bill.

"I believe that today the United States is committing a grave error in building the wall on our border."

It seems apparent that we have a problem with illegal foreigners coming into the United States.  Do you think that the building of a fence on our border with Mexico will help solve the problem?

Finding God in Violin

Tagged:

Several events have happened in my life the past few months concerning my violin playing.  I've been trying to figure out what college I will be attending next fall.  There is actually a college in Arkansas that is trying to build their string program and they seem to have an unfailing interest in my attending their school.  I'm not sure if it is academically the kind of school I want, but knowing that I'm wanted and could get close to a full ride is nice to know.  Anyway, I feel that God is wanting me to go on in college with my violin because He keeps giving me signs in my life.

The $1000 Scholarship

I'm sure that most of the bloggers on this site are here because of the $1000 scholarship.  Of course, many are non-student adults with knowledge that they'd like to share, but most of the bloggers I've seen are here for that money.  Now, I consider myself fairly intelligent, with musical, athletic, and academic skills.  However, I'm not some extraordinary blogger.  My family watches CNN, so I am much more up-to-date in politics than most people my age, but I still fail to have the knowledge one needs to justly blog.  I'm not going to sit here and talk about politics and issues that I know nothing about.  I try to avoid that.  I can do some research but all I end up doing is writing generalizations.  Information that people already know, and some of what I have written has been just speculation on my part, not really backed up by facts.  So what does one like me do?  One with no real skills for blogging?

Orchestra vs. Band

Tagged:

I am personally thankful that I never joined the school band.  In the 6th grade, when the time came around for signing up for choir, band, and orchestra, I wanted to sign up for band.  I wanted to play the drums.  My mom forced me to sign up for orchestra...but I'm so happy she did.  I also had to play the violin instead of the cello, but that's a whole different post.
