An Experiment in Political Perceptions

This is an experiment, and you, fellow bloggers, are the lab rats.

I want to learn about the way people perceive members of different political ideologies. I'm not asking you for your opinions; I just want to know how all of you define the terms "liberal" and "conservative." This is a "political blog," I guess, but please don't just ignore it- my experiment will not work whatsoever if nobody responds. The comments all of you write will be far more important than whatever I write here.  Read More »

A Matter of Opinion

ProgressiveU has exposed me to an agglomeration of new ideas and independent thinkers. I am most struck, however, by the bizarre combination of ideas many bloggers have; combinations I never before thought possible or even logical. People daily defy my stereotypes. For example, I often categorize people and ideas in political terms because that is easiest for me. But ProU bloggers just don't allow that. One person might hold some sort of drastically conservative idea and at the same time hold another idea which I would consider radically liberal. It's made me wonder exactly how and why we humans arrive at the beliefs and convictions which we do.  Read More »

Athletes Don't Belong in College

Tagged:  •    •

I am in favor of abolishing scholarships for athletes at institutions of higher learner. I don't want to come across as an elitist, but I don't think athletes belong in college. Why should millions of dollars fund athletic scholarships, sports teams, and massive sports facilities at a college? Colleges are for learning, not playing. They are supposed to celebrate brain over brawn.  Read More »

Party Extreme Makeover Party!

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

You're all invited to my Party Extreme Makeover Party! The Republican Party Extreme Makeover Party, that is. Sure, it's a mouthful, but it's time that we, the Republicans, all get together and take a good, long, hard look at our own party. It's time to make some major readjustments. Elections are when Americans voice their opinions, and, as our party's former Presidential candidate said when he conceded defeat, Americans wanted a change. We, the Republicans, failed them. Let's take a look at where we went wrong and how we can fix it.  Read More »

A Return to Sanity

America,

What's happened to this great nation these past two decades? This ship of state is nearly sunk among financial woes, and there is little prospect of rescue on the horizon. Our military- those brave volunteers whose personal mission is to protect Americans and their liberties- has been blatantly disrespected and abused by past administrations, and has been spread too thinly across the globe. Even the very earth which sustains our lives is in peril. We live in the Epoch of Gloom.  Read More »

Your Vote Really Doesn't Matter

Tagged:  •    •    •    •    •

Us bloggers, myself included, like to encourage each other to vote. We're always piping, "your vote counts." It's nice to think we're important; that when we cast our ballots, we've made a difference. Well, turns out that's totally and utterly false. Your vote really doesn't matter, and the math proves it.  Read More »

Conservatism Is Progressive

This blog post will not be a manifesto; I will not just spout political ideology. I'm sure we've all become somewhat weary of that.

This blog is about something that's been bothering me for awhile as I've “come of age” politically, so to say. A short time ago, I saw in the Op-Ed section of the New York Times a column by Bob Herbert which lampooned conservatives. Obviously, that's not my issue here; criticism of other people's political ideas is of paramount importance in a democracy. My problem with Herbert's column was his attempt to link conservatism with past evils of America, such as segregation or denying women the right to vote.  Read More »

Political Crossroads

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

I've said repeatedly that I'm going to vote for John McCain next week. But despite the imperturbable political front I've displayed for the past few months, there's been a sort of political panic in my mind. John McCain is not the candidate he used to be. Democrats make fun of his use of the word "maverick," but he really was a maverick once upon a time. Now, it seems that's not as true anymore. I am a Republican, and I am a moderate, too. I belong to the party but think independently. I feel like John McCain's been pushing me away.  Read More »
