Why does the music I like matter to you?

Tagged:

I like all types of music. Look at my iTunes playlist. It ranges from Justin Timberlake to a local metal band that I like called The 2nd System to Danny Elfman to 80's glam rock. I will gladly listen to new music. That's how I got into bands such as Straylight Run, The Strokes and We Are Scientists. So I'm pretty open about my music choices.

Is it odd that I'm more terrified to be walking around my campus at night then I was when I lived in Denver? In span of two weeks, my school has had a student get stabbed, a student get sexually assulted, a student get robbed at gun point, AND friends of one of my co-workers were robbed while they were sleeping. We're a small town...this has been the most violence we have ever had on campus (granted I've only been here for a year but still). It's terrifing. I was scared walking from my car in the parking lot outside my dorm to my room because it isn't well- light. I all but ran from my car to the door.

My parents haven't reacted to it well either. My dad has demanded that I call him every so often to remind him that I'm fine and not dead. My mom wants me to take self-defense classes and buy pepper spray and a whistle. WTF? It just isn't right. I mean yeah, there has been some instances in the past but nothing to the point of it making the news. My dad called me Monday and asked me if I was alright. He had heard that there was a stabbing. It didn't happen on campus but near campus.

I like living in small town and I like going to a relatively small school. We're not tiny but we're not MSU or UofM. It's hard to describe but it seems that we are more closely knit because of the small population...there is more friendly interaction between professors and students (not meant to be dirty). I just want it to be safe again....

Is Harry Potter....evil?

Tagged:  •

I was watching the news and a segement about Harry Potter came on. I hadn't heard what exactly the bit was about but I wanted to see it anyways. Apparently, Harry Potter is evil and teaching kids to do witchcraft. WTF? Yep, there is this lady running around Bay City "preaching" to parents that their kids are gonna grow up and perform magic. *falls off chair laughing hysterically* Wow. I can't believe that she honestly believes that. But she's doing this presentation where she compares the books with The Book, the Bible. According to her, Harry Potter instills the seeds of paganism into childern's head and they will going down the path of evil(Which is kinda funny considering that my friend who attends a Catholic college told me that she has a book that makes inferences, good ones, between the books and the Bible. For example: Harry is a Jesus Christ type figure). She wants to get the books off the shelves of school libraries. One guy said that there is NO way that is happening and that we should be happy that kids are reading. Another, one who practices paganism, said that they don't get their ideas from Harry Potter. Which makes sense. This religion is older than anything and has been around way before Rome or Christianity.

Do you ever get the feeling that people look straight through you?

Do you ever get the feeling that people look straight through you?

No this is not one of my "I'm so pathetic" blogs or my "I'm mad off at the world" blogs. This is just me being contemplative. Which is a shock.

What I mean by "straight through you" is that they just don't see you. For whatever reason, they don't realize that you are there. There are billions of people on this planet and not one of them pay attention to anyone else that isn't in their own little world (friends, family) but if I think about it, even then they really don't see those people. Why do we walk around consumed by our own thoughts? Would it kill us to look around to see if someone needs help? If someone gets hurt, what do most people do? They walk right on by. The world would be a better place if one person helped another out. We shouldn't need shows like "Extreme Home Makeover" to force ourselves to help people.
Now, I'm not saying that I'm a saint cuz I'm not. I'm guilty of this too, I can not not say that I haven't done it. I have walked by someone who needed money and didn't do a thing about. Or I have walked by someone who has fallen and pretended I didn't see them. Or I have laughed when someone trips then walk by and not help them, at all. I'm not innocent but I have realized that I do have faults. I have tried correct them......*tried* being the key word.
