A few days ago, at University High School only thirty minutes away from my own school, a student was stabbed to death. So close to home the mere talked about became a reality to some. To others it is an horrific event that only happens in far away lands or perhaps not an event at all but a talked about nightmare. Even though I am sometimes guilty of a crime in which I sometimes believing the worst has never happened and will never happen to me, I found myself sick to the stomach when a school I was only at weeks before had been a victim of the crime most students like me believe to be just a nightmare never a reality. Today after a test my teacher asked the class a question, "How many of you know of students how bring weapons to school ". I wasn't shocked to see a few raise there hands. Even though my school is not a stereotypical prone to violence school I realized just what she was saying. She asked another question. " If you know that certain people have weapons, I ask.....way don’t you report them?" We sat in silence. Then it became clear that as a student we can prevent more than a teacher administrator or even school officers. We as students have to protect ourselves, our friends, and others who might not be our friends but someone who helped pick up a book that we had once dropped. We have to speak out and tell the small concerns. if not for the victim, for the person who's maybe act of violent passion might cost them there life. We all make mistakes some un forgivable. But to me it is unforgivable to kill another student and it is unforgivable to give the weapon to the killer.
