Self-Made Man Ch.1 and 2 & BPD
I'm reading Norah Vincent's Self-Made Man, and it makes me ponder about the relationships men have with each other and women have with each other. Some feminists say that the woman in the nuclear family today are among the most isolated in history, having no one to turn to except her male husband, her male doctor and her kids. In the book, Norah or Ned experiences brotherhood and accpetance by men that she has never experienced before with women. Are men more accepting of other men than women? Are women not willing to band together because they're too isolated to care? In certain cultures like Chinese culture and more collectivist cultures around the world, women bond together more. In America, it seems like women don't bond together very often, and we need that friendship in order to survive. How many people are truly friends like the ones they portray on Sex and the city? It saddens me when women don't bond together. Read More »
Erotic God & Da Vinci Code
Does anyone believe that God can be erotic? In one of the books in the Bible, there's a song about how God wants to make love to us. And if God is our Father, doesn't it mean that we're going to be making love to our dads, thus completing the Electra/Oedpius complex?
I do find it erotic that God wants to make love to us, and I do believe it's true, but I don't know how to fit it together with the concept that he's our Father. Maybe God is really God, and he has supernatural powers, so his relationship with us doesn't fit in the this-worldly definitions of familial relationships. Read More »
My Venting of the day
Does anyone feel anything about Kate Moss and her recent drug scandal? Maybe it's old news already. Does anyone else feel anything about Keira Knightley taking over her job, according to TIME magazine.
What upsets me is that people like Paris Hilton are controlling the media and the cultural apparatus in our society. The more we focus on celebrities, the less we focus on what we should be focusing on, the accountability of our elected officials. All this attention devoted to celebrities takes away from our attention that we could be spending on holding our representatives accountable and transparent. Futhermore, it's the first time in our history that people like Paris Hilton are part of the cultural dissemination center. Usually, in the past, Europe was where we turned to get culture and ideas about how to live our lives. Now, we turn to people like Paris Hilton, which may not be the wisest idea; she's not that bright. If our society turns to people like Paris Hilton for ideas and culture, then what kind of statement does that make about our society? Are we getting dumb and dumber? Read More »
My day
Hi, this is my first time blogging. I feel like Ariana Huffington. Just kidding. I hope I can gain more independence from my parents. I'm kinda fantasy-bond to them b/c they try to control my emotions, and I'm trying to gain more independence from them. I read today in the news about the terrorist guy involved in 9/11, and I'm absolutely amazed at his defiance. My favorite movie is The Hours because I love feminist literature, and I'm about to read the Feminine Mystique by Betty Freedman. I had a very similar experience to the Hours as in I was sent away somewhere because I was depressed, and was put on a pedestal, and was abused by people closest to me. My favorite monologue in the whole world is the one Nicole Kidman says about her illness, that the basest patient has some right over the matter of his prescription. Read More »
