The Ability to Drink (Legally) Should Come With an IQ Test

Tagged:

I’ve noticed a lot of groups on blog and networking sites with titles that are something like this:

“Lower teh Drinking Age to Eighteen, Jus Like Every Other Fricken Country!!1”

You see, I really don’t agree with this.  Most American eighteen year olds I know should not be allowed within fifty feet of a bottle of alcohol.  The same goes for a lot of twenty-one year olds.  I don’t drink, largely because I’m a control freak and because one too many bad things have happened to friends of mine.  I really don’t think a lot of people, twenty-one or not, should be legally able to consume alcohol as much as they do either.  A person isn’t magically mature, intelligent, and capable enough to drink on their twenty-first birthday.  I know several underage people who drink that I would say do so responsibly, and carry their drunken selves in a much better manner than some “legal” people I know.  The ability to legally buy and consume alcohol, in my opinion, should come with an IQ test, not an age restriction.  Add in a common sense test while you’re at it, because really, there is nothing worse than a drunken idiot.

According to a draft ruling by the FDA, meat from cloned cows, pigs, and goats is safe for human consumption, and will likely be available for sale in your local grocery store before you know it.  At this point, the FDA says it won’t recommend a special label for cloned meat, but will not make a final decision without public opinion.  Well here you go: LABEL IT!  I would very much appreciate knowing whether or not the flesh I’m about to consume is authentic, old school, unaltered meat.  I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this way.  Thanks, but I’ll be sticking to my free-range meat.  I certainly don’t know enough about the science behind it and its effects to want to buy it.

I belong to PETA.  People for the Eating of Tasty Animals, that is.  I respect a person’s choice to be vegetarian, vegan, etc.  but I am vehemently opposed to the animal rights group most commonly known as PETA.  People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is, in my opinion, a crock of shit.  Don’t get me wrong, by saying PETA is a crock of shit, I’m not saying we should test beauty products on animals.  I’m saying PETA sucks.  I eat free-range meat whenever possible.  I believe we should treat animals ethically, but I don’t believe in a lot of PETA’s extreme views and methods.  Spay and neuter pets, yes, go vegetarian, sure, but tell kids their mommy kills animals?  Hell no.  And hey, what is this “total animal liberation” …no pets?  No service animals?  I love my animals, thank you very much.  Or what about the PETA employees who are facing animal cruelty charges for killing animals?  Something doesn’t add up, I thought they were supposed to be saving animals? Or the fact that if animal testing found a cure for AIDS, the president of PETA is quoted as saying she would be against it?  Sorry, but I’m a little more concerned about the three million people who have died from AIDS this year.  I love this one; PETA funded an Animal Liberation Front activist who burned down a research laboratory in the name of animal liberation.  Is that any way to get things done?  I think not.

Long Time No See

I've been blogging nearly every day since I was a sophomore in high school.  But that's my personal blog, not this blog.  My personal blog is quite boring, I admit.  I whine about music, eating too much turkey, and how much I hate a certain class.  I rarely blog about issues, only menial snippets about what's going on with me personally.  Here's my chance to blog about current issues, and I'm slacking.  Naughty me.  It could be worse though, some of the stuff I've seen in blogs really scares me.  Girls are blogging about their caloric intake, and giving tips about purging in the shower.  Or there are the kids who use blogging as an rpg, and pretend to be celebrities.  Oh, and you can't forget the suicide tips.  What on earth is going on in the blogging community?  Something clearly isn't right.

Just so you know,

I'm not feeling so smart right now.  I spelled intelligent wrong on my last post and I'm too tired to figure out how to fix it.  It makes me feel like a hypocrite for ragging on people who don't know the difference between your and you're, but really, that's just sad.  Or those who speak in "chat speak" (ie: how r u 2day?).  Is it just me, or is chat speak totally worthless at times?  I mean, are you really saving yourself time by typing boi instead of boy?  I admit, I use lol and brb at times, but at least I mix lol up with a few hahaha's.  Though I have to say, the worst lazy misspelling I've seen is "cum" rather than come.  I don't know, maybe I'm just a pervert, but I certainly don't think of come when I see the word cum.  Oh, and don't even get me started on 1337.  It certainly has its place in games, but don't bring it into a normal conversation with me.  I can read it (inevitable with a gamer as a best friend), but I don't want to.

Always with the yelling...

You know what I can't stand about politics?  The constant yelling and personal attacks.  Come on now, personal attacks are one of the falacies of logic.  You can't destroy someone's argument based on an aspect of their personal life.  Rather than bludgeoning your oponent for personal reasons, why not actually talk about the issues and where you stand on them?  Why when I think of political debate do I picture the bleeding heart liberals and die-hard conservatives screaming "well my opponent [insert stupid personal attack or completely unjustifiable "pulled out of your arse" comment here]," rather than something intellegent?  It's like watching middle school girls fight over a boy!  It's sickening, really.  No wonder there's been a huge decrease in voter turn out... and what ever happened to median candidates?  Sometimes I feel like the only people around me who are interested in politics swing one way or the other, and they swing hard.  To be honest, I can't stand either of the extremes, and am incredibly turned off by them.

Blogging for Progress?

Tagged:

I have to wonder how progressive "blogging for progress" really is.  It's a nice thought, but who does it reach?  Sometimes it seems like the only people who read these blogs are the tiny chunk of American teens who vote and care about politics, who are already interested in the things discussed on the site.  I'm going to take a guess and say that most of the 1077 guests currently online saw the site through fastweb, and are hoping for a scholarship.  At least half of them will probably be turned off by the so-called progressive content (which really, I think it is progressive, only, we may be preaching to the choir) and leave.  Then a good chunk of those, like me, will sign up, but rarely (if at all) post.
