"They're just animals!"

automaticeyes's picture

If I had a dollar for every time I've heard someone claim that the reason they don't care much about animal cruelty and abuse is because "they're just animals", I would be making Bill Gates get in line at a soup kitchen.

With a war raging in the middle east, and an economy that fluctuates daily, I can see where people prioritize their concerns. This is not to attack them, because they have every right to be concerned for their well-being, as well as their family's. However, this does not excuse them for shutting their eyes to the cruelty that occurs within their own cities and towns, anywhere around them. While I could expand the point of this blog to include all species of animals, I figured it's much easier to attract attention from those who can relate to the blog, therefore am choosing to focus on domesticated animals/farm animals. Believe it or not, these guys face some of the worst cruelty out there. Yes, the family pet can be abused, and yes, the family pet is often neglected in animal abuse cases.
This blog is admittedly in no organizational order, but nonetheless anything written is of importance.

Before I get to the rest of the blog, here are some statistics and research findings I have found around the internet to let you chew on (and note, they may be hard to swallow):
+Between 2 and 4 million puppies are bred each year in puppy mills and sent to stores, which account for over 80% of the AKC's business. A known pet store who uses puppy mills for their source of puppies is Petland. Other stores include Puppy Paradise and Noah's Ark Pet Center.
+In 2007, pit bulls accounted for 25% of animal abuse cases.
+ About 64.5% of animal abuse cases involve dogs.
+Most people tried in animal abuse cases have other criminal offenses on their records.
+ Psychologists have found that a lot of serial killers have a past of abusing, torturing and killing animals. Along with that, there have been some correlation studies found between domestic abuse cases and animal abuse cases.

You might have read those and thought, "Okay, that sucks, but why should I care? Dogs and cats die all the time."
Yes, they do; usually because someone has let them die. And I welcome you to put aside doubts for a minute or two and think about your own pet, if you own one, or one that someone else has that you thoroughly enjoy being around. Would you like it if this was happening to them? Of course not. Now, I'm not claiming that those who ignore these things necessarily want animals to be neglected. I take it as an implication that they're simply not informed enough to want to take action, or think any action they take will be useless. I assure you, friends, this is not the case.
Anyone who has watched Animal Planet knows of shows like Animal Cops in various cities, and the new show, Pit bulls and Parolees. These shows depict the real life issue of animal abuse and neglect, and the task of placing these animals into new homes, despite their troubled pasts.
I cannot tell you how utterly angry it makes me when I see shivering, sickly dogs chained up in the backyard, skinny from not being fed and their water being disgustingly dirty, or cats with burned limbs because someone thought it would be funny to light a match and see what the cat would do. It makes me so angry because it seems like no matter the consequences these people receive, people continue to hurt and torture animals for "fun" or because they simply don't care. I'm angered because to me, this is just as bad as neglecting a human. I will not get into the issue of placing humans before animals, because it is my personal choice to balance them, and I will not sit here trying to force people to think the same about that.

When I see that someone has hurt an animal, they are no better in my eyes than a murderer, rapist, or serial killer. When I see that they get fines and community service hours and no jail time, it becomes even more disheartening. When Michael Vick got off basically scott free for his disgusting dog fighting, I was enraged. To me, this is not proper punishment for those who decide to treat other living things so cruelly.
I am not a supporter of the circus (Sorry, Ringling Bros fans, this is for you), because it has been proven in many publicly known cases and videos that their animals endure abuse daily. Next time you're on YouTube, look up Ringling Beats Animals to see it first hand (The video is by PETA, who by the way I do NOT support, but the video is very scary). I also do not support dog racing, horse racing, dog fighting, or any sport that damages the well being of animals for the benefit of human entertainment.

By volunteering at the humane society, I have been privileged enough to work with dogs who have come from bad situations. Dana, a spunky young pit bull, was left in a pantry by her owners to starve and die. After meeting with Dana and having a chance to play and socialize with her, I couldn't understand why anyone would want to hurt such a playful thing. Then again, I can't understand why anyone would want to hurt any animal at all. Some of the dogs there have been there for years, not being able to really find a place where they'll fit in. Being a no kill shelter, their stays are unlimited, but even so, the fact that they have been there for so long is rather sad.
When we take on the responsibility of having a companion animal, we are implying that they will be well cared for for as long as our situation permits. And if ever our situation does not permit proper care of an animal (losing your home, moving somewhere that doesn't allow dogs, allergies, ect), it should be out duty to make sure that the animal is going somewhere where it will continue to be cared for. All too often are cats and dogs and other pets just left in abandoned houses because people couldn't take them with, or simply didn't care to. This is neglectful and very shameful. Humane societies and shelters exist for a reason, and would much rather someone admit they could not care for a dog than to stumble on the property later on and find it in the basement. When you do something in the best interest of the animal, you are showing good character. Good character builds good people in the future, something that is taught from a young age.

I do not expect people who read this to go out and donate their life savings to shelters or go out on a street corner with a sign that says "STOP PUPPY MILLS!" That's not realistic, and humans don't work that way. What I do hope it does is open minds and encourage, even just a little bit, more effort into looking for ways to help out. A few dollars isn't much, and at least voicing your support will encourage others to follow suit. When people around us don't care, we start to not care. But if we care and we make it known, the people around us may start to change as well.
Animals can do amazing things for humans, if they're given the chance. Dogs (and cats, too!) have been used in rehabilitation programs at hospitals, where patient morale and illness recovery rates improve quite a bit because of the programs. There are also studies to show that animal interaction can improve blood pressure, stress levels, and depression. Anyone who has a pet can probably attest to the fact that their animals have personalities of their own. Animals are not stupid, and never have been; they have feelings, emotions, personality, wit, intelligence...they communicate with us, even though they cannot speak our language. And if you can't look into the eyes of a neglected animal and see that they are asking you for help, I encourage you to expose yourself to more of these situations, for I know the ability to see it is there. You just have to open your mind to it.

I hate it when people say that "they're just animals" as well. I also believe that animals have feelings, and emotions. It's amazing how many people don't think animals have feelings. I think even fish have feelings! You see them swim away away really fast when they are scared. That's a feeling. I don't understand puppy mills though. The only thing I know is that they're normally in bad conditions, but breeding puppies, I don't see what the issue is. I've never had a pet before but I love dogs and I believe that dogs and other animals have something special about them that makes humans healthier when they are played with. =)

Blogging is the "new medium" it seems, much as the old commentary was for the newspapers. Those that then commented on the comments made by the comment author, and/or reply to the comment, or to the author, all this can get confusing. Sometimes ending up a debate and comment war of an comment to the author or the commentary discussed and printed. I've seen that happen in blogs that are not "filtered."
How blogging was established I would truly have to research and use this internet to find out. I have no interest to do that. Nor do I wish to become front page news. That's okay if that happens. My intent to blog here is for awareness of knowledge known that might not be known and not even considered to be imagination.
Example being the blog I did of rpm's of life. I never intended that to be front page news. The intent was for awareness of connection of intention, as the blog was "blogged."
I will admit I'm not a student, and I'm a guest here even as a member being registered and try to respect the sites way, and know to give authorization to blog "content," should that be the case.
Out of content of this comment, I will use my "logo" as an example. The fairy gif. It comes as a gift. It is free from: http://www.feebleminds-gifs.com/animated-gifs-17.html
I use that for myself for it is pertinent to me. I reference from the source of knowing to myself. One place of source is: http://waeshael.home.att.net/origins.htm from "Theories of Fairy Origins." Another is: http://www.articlesbase.com/art-and-entertainment-articles/fairy-tattoos...
Borrowing without permission I copy and paste: "...The word "fairy" comes from the Latin word "fata," which means fate. This brings to mind the underlying symbolization of destiny. This symbolism of a fairy tattoo can bring to mind passing through different stages of life..."
The symbol is "spiritual" to me and have adopted "her" as a synonymous representation to myself for identity. The same can be said for [x]. If you know math and floor and ceiling functions, that can represent integral part of unknown. I use that "logo" also on occasion. It "fits" me. I am integral part of "unknown." For source of that, you can look to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_mathematical_symbols_by_introducti...
The info is there for that understanding.
Having been online or the experience of this, I have seen a trend happening from my "looking at" it. I find economics empowering here. Not just popularity. There are site pages here, still here on this internet, that are "defunct." You can bring up the site, but it does not "function." Example being of that might be Lycos, and the original Angelfire designation of site, for website and blog, dating back to the late nineties.
It's still there, still functions somewhat, as with the blog maybe, but the "whole" of the site is not so functional. This is because it is "outdated."
Economics seems here to be taking a toll, not just bad grammar and content structure. Many, many sites I've encountered now have "popped up" with an entry of listing to the page asking for donation, just as this site has to the front page.
The internet is not "free" like people think it is, and you can run into being a bandwidth bandit not thinking you are one, or even knowing of that. I'm graced for the fact that my internet access is included in my rent, and don't pay separate for it, but know also, that the cable company is willing to do what they do to provide internet for the costs they bear. That I know my land lord pays for out of her budget. And I pay for it through my rent payment. I'm blessed as I am.
I hope this site remains and doesn't go down. I blog not only here but other places as well. I found this "place" by spiritual concern whether you believe that or not. I'm not afraid to state this in this comment. What I have to be careful for though, is just that spiritual concern. For their are dark forces out there and they do damage. I exhibit myself the way that I do, and go with spirit with that for being known.
I'm privileged to be a guest here and hope I remain to be that way.

To get this blog on the front page:

Add some links to where you're getting your information, or at least some place where we can look it up to see ourselves. It makes your claims more credible.

Add a little organization to your blog. It's got good content. It just bounces around a lot.

"I am not one who was born in the possession of knowledge; I am one who is fond of antiquity, and earnest in seeking it there." Confucius

You care and are aware, and this is most important. For yourself and the world. You have an eye that is not blind. Nor do you see with blinders on.
I wish I could have a place to care for all that I see not blinded. Unfortunately for me I find the way of things not my way just as much as I use my free will. If the great maker wants me to help the unfortunate, then there will be a way. Whether I like it or not.
It is very sad to know of the plight of the lesser of the greater. And this can include those that are known as animals, by a word label to me. They might just be somebody's mother is a verse from an old song back in the day. And to think that animals are treated like they are, even in their ignorance, the one who treats the animal is just as much in ignorance.
They're not just animals, even though I don't know the truth of the reality of their condition. It is wrongful to know of them as something less than life, and treat that life as less than us. An animal is an animal, and what price will you pay for that life?Whether it is known now to you as just a pet, or a very dear loved one. What will you say on judgement day, given that question to speak up or be silent. If asked, why did you abandon them? Why did you treat them the way you do? If you have grace within your heart, you'll say the truth. The truth that just might be you cared, and loved that animal as yourself, dear to your heart. Treated though with love from the view point of yourself as a human being towards this loved animal. The One will judge you then without judgment, for there is none to be had. Because all along you were the One whom cared for this life.
Not so for those that don't care. You'll find with life just maybe, before you get out of here, how you're treated, in hindsight, like that animal. You'll "wake up," and wonder why? Why did I? You'll know, right away, because the truth will be there to make you a liar, and you'll find yourself maybe an animal someday. I hope you never know that realization of horror, that the animal you are, will now get what you deserved.

If there is such a thing as karma, I truly believe that those who ignore will get what they deserve.

"I am not one who was born in the possession of knowledge; I am one who is fond of antiquity, and earnest in seeking it there." Confucius

There may be just such a "karmic condition" and it can be felt just as much with risk. Oneself might know the karma if realized, thinking hindsight backwards, but not necessarily so.
What is truth that I know, is you increase the risk for that karmic condition. Every time you wrong yourself, you increase the risk for a karmic type "load" to encroach upon you. Whether you realize that or not. Even in ignorance. And that is the "key" somewhat to that state.
When you're good, you charge up karma to have it "avalanche" down upon you later on. Like a snow avalanche down a mountain side. Good might come to you, can you see? It depends on the "weight" carried there, and too, how that "trigger" when, if, and how it will occur. It might not happen in your life here. Yet that "weight" is still there. Still being built upon, even in the life after this. Those that wrongly do things, ignorantly or knowing willfully meaning to be mean per say, that "weight" builds up, and someday, whether here or there, that avalanche will fall. The only "if" about it is, it might not happen here in this life. I guarantee that. Just like you know the sky resorts to dynamite the slopes to prevent a potential avalanche. You run the risk before hand with harm with intention to do so, and increase the risk of oneself to karma, like an avalanche waiting to fall down the mountain side. Both bad and good. Now naturally everyone wants good. Nothing wrong with that. The great maker out there if you believe of that, is good. It is good though, that we define here as good, the good there being unknown to us.
Like you wrote, those that ignore will truly get what they deserve, whether in ignorance or meaning to be mean. It's guaranteed, for the potential increases the more they ignore and keep doing so. Evil is not just harm to another, that's a part of the whole. Ignorance is a main "enemy." And that ignorance is what will be the most important risk factor for your soul, labeling that for id's sake.
Awareness is an answer, a key to becoming truly wise, along with knowledge. For it isn't knowledge alone that makes you aware. It can be said of oneself to know goodness from feeling, and the opposite of knowing to hurt. Hurt both in wanting to hurt, as in intentional hurt, kill, and destroy, and then feeling hurt from being hurt, as you might feel guilty, and maybe the knowing of despair.
Either way charges the risk factor for that future avalanche. You must "dynamite" that way out of your life, so you won't know hurt in either condition to the future of you.
There lies an answer to your question of karma. And I don't believe in karma. Yet it is there, whether I believe it or not.

They're may be a magical pink unicorn living in your kitchen that keeps all of your beets fresh, but the evidence suggests that this is not the case. The same is true for "karma." There is absolutely no objective evidence at all that suggests that the phenomenon called "karma" actually exists.
