This is my first post here on ProgressiveU, but I intend to make it an interesting one. Do you believe in ordinary adventures? I do. I am one of those people who seem to have ordinary adventures all the time.
I had one just the other day, in fact. At my school, near the band room, are little rooms with pianos in them for practicing. I was in one of the practice rooms on my cell phone. Though I had originally gone in to practice the piano, I decided that the sound proofed room would be a nice place to have a quiet conversation with my mother.
On my way out, I noticed that the handle was stuck.
This was no surprise. Those doors are from an age when they made real doors. Doors that could survive a nuclear holocaust. They are made from a single piece of wood, instead of plywood that's glued together. The handles are about as old, and sometimes require some twerking to get them to work. I hung up on my mother, and moved to use both hands... but to no avail.
The handle, it seemed, was quite broken, and I was trapped inside. Luckily, there are windows all around. I banged on the door as a student passed by, and they rushed to get a teacher. It's a curious thing about these practice rooms, they are only sound proofed in one direction. I could hear everything as though it were being said right next to me. I heard the girl mention to her friend that "some idiot locked themselves in the practice room." I was far from amused. It wasn't my fault that the handle broke.
They returned with a teacher, who tried to unlock the door to let me out, but had no luck. Getting worried now, he called the head janitor and a vice principal that I know named John Wayland.
Mr. Wayland walked up, sounding concerned as he was briefed on my situation, right up until they saw me.
He met my eyes through the window and smiled. "Oh, its YOU."
The next 40 minutes was spent trying to get me out. They tried everything. Though I couldn't always see what was going on, I know that they took apart part of the door frame. There was drilling, and sawing, and hammering.
Three grown men tried to kick the door down, without success.
I tried to push the glass window out of the door, but failed.
When they finally got me out, there was at least 8 adults gathered around. It was achieved with a combination of drilling, sawing, and kicking. When the door popped open, everyone cheered. I emerged from the small room and gave everyone a high five. It was an exciting moment, emotions and adrenaline were running high.
In the end, I was a bit sad to escape the room. While I was in there, it felt nice, everyone gathering around to help me. It was also like a glimpse into the past. Human nature never really changes, no matter what new toys we have. This is what an ordinary adventure reminds us of....
