Secular Humanist and Atheist are not morbid and depressed persons. Look at the secular humanist vision that Gene Roddenberry created with Star Trek. Granted each version strayed from his principles, but the original Star Trek presented a version of the future where diversity created a unified planet. We saw Asians, Russians, African Americans, and so on on the crew. Star Trek so the first interracial kiss on television.
The Secular Humanist and Atheist that are encountered, and are suffering from depression ask why? Most likely it is not because they abandoned their religion but rather they saw the damage the hypocrisy caused by religion. Perhaps they were abused by the Priest that was to guide them, perhaps they were bashed for a perceived moral defect such as being gay, it could be any number of things.
Look at the world we live in, how can it not be depressing to some extent? We live in era where anti abortionist take horrific images to schools to protest in front of them. Look at the world we live in where poverty and hunger are common place. Look at the world we live in where queers cannot have human rights because of some perceived moral defect. Look at the world we live and look at the damage down by some religious groups.
It is hard not to get depressed, but rather than wallow in self pity about the state of the world I actively work to change it.

Throughout history atheists, existentialists, new-age humanists, etc. are typically thought to be depressed because way back in the day their thoughts were taboo.
I think that in today's world where people are more open to thinking and ideas, atheists are getting a better rap (among most people).
