Is man to blame for the global climate change?

Man or nature? A very controversial topic, I know. I hear both sides of the story, and I am still not convinced on either side. The industrial boom is to be a blame for the rising in temperature? Some say its nature; the world is always ever changing. The world without man would be a different world I am sure on that, do we really know how much damage we are doing? Do we really know that if we stopped everything we are doing now and revert to being primitive with no technology, that the glaciers will stop melting? The Co2 leaking into the atmosphere is a big factor in climate change according to some. German Scientist believe there is "no measurable effect" on temperature change from the releasing Co2. So is nature doing its thing? Or are we causing the temperatures to rise? how do we know? I do believe that we are putting a bad foot print on the earth there are many things that we can do to help erase some damage. As long as humans remain on the earth we will have some sort of effect on how the earth moves on. We do need to make some changes in our everyday lives.( I firmly believe that). If every one uses less energy in there homes there would be a drastic change in the amount of energy we use in the world. Any small step taken by numbers of people will have a big change. I still am not completely convinced on either side of the rising temprature debate, more research may help.

cosmic's picture

Global warming can be both a natural process and aggravated by human activities. For one, the planet goes through natural cycles which include ice ages and warm periods caused by the wobble in the Earth's axis, solar activity, or other geological/cosmic phenomena. In fact, it is probable that part of our current warming is merely part of the normal "reheating" process that has been occurring since our last ice age 20,000 years ago. In fact, warm periods are more common than cold periods on Earth. For example, consider that the Earth has had permanent ice caps for only 20% of its geologic history.

On the other hand, the vast majority of scientists agree that greenhouse gas levels have skyrocketed since the Industrial Age, and that these gases, released as a result of human activity, contribute to global warming.

And on yet another hand, scientists are seeing new evidence that our sun has entered an unusually severe solar minimum- it is putting out much less energy than normal, which could potentially disrupt the climate of Earth. Solar minima are normal and happen regularly and frequently, but our current one is much deeper than normal. The "Little Ice Age" 300 years ago was caused by such a solar minimum. It is far too early to tell if our current solar minimum will develop into a similar event. It is interesting that there are competing forces out there causing the Earth to heat up and cool down- I wonder which trend will prevail.

I personally believe that global warming is a threat, and that it is aggravated by humans- not caused by us (since it is natural), but made worse by us. Besides, regardless of whether or not you think global warming is caused by people, we should all want to stop it. It is rapidly changing the planet we live on and therefore threatening our own survival as a species.
