First Post

So welcome all to the first post on this blog. I don't know how much I'll post, but I'm going to shoot for once a week. This week has been pretty interesting. Have you ever taken care of an older person? I got that experience this week. My in-laws went out of town this weekend and they have had grandma staying with them for about a year now. She can't really be alone for super long and she can't get up and do the basic functions of life without help. So my husband, me, my sister-in-law and brother-in-law are all hanging out here at the house to make sure that between all our schedules someone is here with her, but the majority of the physical take care of has come on me and my husband. Its very interesting. Its not like taking care of a baby or a little kid because they'll won't necessarily tell you if you're doing it wrong. And there not so independent sometimes. Grandma has trouble getting up and down on her own, I stand beside her to steady her, but today at her dialysis appointment, she was bounded and determined to get in that chair herself. She did so very well I was impressed. However, I think it will eventually wear her out...her independence that is....we'll see how much longer she stays up :P

i helped my friend out one time because his grandpa had to go on a run to florida for his job and we had to watch and take care of his grandma and we actually had to help her in the shower (he did that one by himself) haha we also had to get her up outta bed like 8 times a day to eat, go to the bathroom and she got sick of us helping so she tried it herself and one of her cats bolted out from under the bed and smacked against her leg. and oddly enough she broke her leg in 2 places and she just sat back down and asked for our help to the car to take her to the hospital... independence is good but ignorance can come back to nip you in the ass. haha make sure to tell ur grandma that. hahaha

I've been wondering a lot how the pride of these people is. I can't imagine it's very pleasant relying on someone to attend to your basic needs, and I wonder if a lot of older Americans realize they've deteriorated to this point.
