Marvel vs DC

Marvel and DC are easily the most recognizable comic book franchises in existence, but which one is better? On one hand there are the Marvel superheroes who are in more believable scenarios. Despite the fact that they always save the day they are never embraced by the general public because lets face it, if someone with super powers suddenly appeared out of nowhere would you think they were here for good or evil like Spider-Man and the X-men. They could save the world a hundred times over and yet people are still afraid of them. Then we have the DC heroes, who are more liked by the general public with a few exceptions, one being Batman. Batman has been seen as a vigilante for most of his comic book run, and the dark themes of his comic can appeal to more people where as the other DC heroes have a more lighthearted theme such as Superman. The more light hearted theme could attract a lot of people as well. All in all which franchise do you consider the best. The more real and dramatic Marvel heroes or the more light (I'm aware that not all of the DC heroes have pleasant themes) DC heroes. I might expand upon this entry later.

Well I'm not quite sure where you're trying to go "progress wise" on this post, but I'll put in my two cents anyway.

The DC heroes are often mocked for being too invincible and god-like, which I could understand. There are a few that just seem too perfect. Then you've got Marvel, which I believe has mostly characters created by Stan Lee, so if someone doesn't like some of Lee's creations, they might not like any of them.

I really don't think it's an issue of which company is putting out "better" comics, unless you feel like studying the market or writing your own series. Personally, I like characters from both ends of the spectrum.

Unless by "better", you're talking on a different level and not just for entertainment's sake. The X-men have themes of racism, Spiderman shows that a young guy can make a distance, Superman shows that some can still believe in truth and justice, while Batman can teach the importance of doing the right thing versus being a vigilante for vengeance's sake.

It's a tie so far, in my opinion.

Then we could get into Wildstorm and Dark Horse and such, but we'd just be pressing the issue. :)

...because both do an admirable job of telling their stories. DC is a "utopian" tale of mythological proportions. The most popular DC charaters are archetyical exaggerations of heroes. They represent a idealized goal to which the reader can aspire. Marvel, on the other hand, is a "morality tale." Its heroes are defined more by their flaws than they are by their powers. They are subject to the same foibles and failueres as the rest of us, just on a grander scale, and their stories are primarily about how human they are despite their super powers.
