Well for those who haven't heard, the 4th installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series is coming out in a couple years. I am personally a dedicated fan and I can't wait to get a glimpse of Captain Jack in action once again. However, there are a couple things that gave me a double take: for starters, Will and Elizabeth are out. The movies will now only be about Jack.
I really have to question this one, because I think the triplet of those characters combined really helped to make the movie, as a whole, more entertaining to watch. We all loved Jack's antics, but the underlying storyline was made more serious and more interesting by the addition of the other characters. Remember the movie The Emperor's New Groove? Loved it, it one of the best animated movies that has come out in the last couple of years, and the character Kronk's antics made it all the better. But then they made a sequel just about Kronk, and frankly it sucked. He didn't have enough depth to base a whole movie off of just him, he was designed to work as part of a group, with Cuzco, Pacha, and Yzma all joining in to form the entire movie as we know it.
You can't base a whole movie off of one character screwing around, and I have a fear that's what this is going to turn into. In addition, they are going to try and make the movie about the search for Atlantis; flying machines and other sci-fi elements will only be part of the package. And really, isn't 3 enough? There's only so much you can milk out of one series, and I would hate to see this one get tarnished by a bad movie.
We'll have to wait and see how this turns out, they aren't starting filming until about 2011. Hopefully it will continue on, and give us a movie we will truly remember, even though it is all about Captain Jack Sparrow.

I read in a magazine article where they were poking fun at the sequel-happy creators of the Pirates franchise saying "We'll make Pirates movies until pirates become gay again."
I personally think 3 is enough. I enjoyed the movies, but to all those drooling girls who couldn't get enough of Depp in fake dredds will be excited for the next installment. Even if the plot sucks big time, they can always just stare into the limited depths of Mr. Sparrow's eyes... :)
I loved the first three movies, and I only recently read online that a fourth installment was being developed. I know I'll be watching, but I do feel that it will be lacking because of Will and Elizabeth's not being apart of the story. However, after watching the third installment the other day (which I have on DVD), I realized it would be pointless to bring them into the movie because, for the most part, their story has ended. It wouldn't be impossible, but it would be kind of pointless in my opinion.

I agree. The 3rd movie definitely set up an ongoing story for Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa, and wrapped up the story of Elizabeth and Will.
Frasier succeeded fairly well without most of the characters from Cheers. I have confidence that a "spin off" of Pirates of the Caribbean will do just fine taking on a life of its own.
"What a crazy random happenstance!"
